The conversation, published by Simon Gage in PerthNow on 27 March 2023, connects a public career milestone with experiences she had largely kept private.
Why the interview looks back at Innocent Eyes
Goodrem’s debut album, Innocent Eyes, was released in 2003. The 2023 conversation takes its anniversary as a way into a broader reflection: how a singer’s public story can be shaped by different career chapters, and by personal experiences audiences may not see.
The interviewer also asks whether the record was the second bestselling Australian album of all time. The interview does not establish that ranking, so it should be treated as a question raised in the conversation rather than a verified chart fact.
What Goodrem said about cancer and her operation
Goodrem said she had cancer at 18. She also recounted an operation on an infected gland after which she awoke with nerve damage affecting her tongue. She said she did not know how long it would take to recover: “I didn’t have any idea when it was going to get back to normal — it could be three months or three years, you just don’t know.”

Her account is personal testimony in the PerthNow interview, not a detailed medical history. The conversation does not provide independent clinical records, further treatment details or a current medical update.
Why she chose to share a previously private struggle
Goodrem said the experience had been private for a long time. The pandemic prompted her to think about the silent struggles people carry and about starting again. “But when we all went through what we went through with COVID I realised there’s a silent battle for people and I thought, well this is my reset and a lot of people are going through a reset so I wanted to share it,” she told Gage.

Where Goodrem spent the pandemic
Asked about the pandemic, Goodrem said she returned to Australia at its beginning: “As soon as the pandemic began, I came straight back to Australia.” She valued being with family. Her answer places the pandemic in a personal context rather than offering a broader account of how it affected her career.
