She developed a way of tap dancing that treated the feet as percussion and the music as a partner in improvisation. Her mentor, tap dancer Jimmy Slyde, called her the “first lady of swing”—a personal nickname, not a formal title.
Who was Sarah Petronio?
Petronio was born in Bombay in February 1944 to David Samuels and Ruby Sassoon. Her parents came from Baghdadi Jewish families who had moved from West Asia to Rangoon; before the Second World War, they relocated to Bombay. Music was part of family life: her father played violin, and her brother Jack played piano.
Anu Kumar’s 2018 profile for Scroll recounts that Jack introduced her to the jazz of Ahmad Jamal, Dave Brubeck and Nat King Cole. American movie musicals drew her toward tap. At St Joseph’s Convent in Bandra she studied Bharatanatyam; outside class, she danced the twist and cha-cha-cha and sang scat with the Johnny Baptist band at weddings and social functions. Those early influences brought together Indian dance, popular music and jazz before she began building a career in tap.
How did she develop her style in Paris?
In 1963, at 19, Petronio left Bombay with her family for Brooklyn aboard the SS Steelworker. She worked as an advertising copywriter and studied theatre, creative writing and voiceover production at the New School. She also took tap lessons with Henry LeTang, Bob Audy and Jerry Ames.

She married art director and photographer Peter Petronio in 1964, and the couple moved to Paris. Petronio found the local tap lessons she encountered focused on choreography and felt old-fashioned. Within a year, she had opened a small studio in the city’s 6th arrondissement. There she played jazz, worked on speed and improvised, shaping rhythmic phrases in response to the music. Scroll describes this improvisational jazz-tap practice as her trademark.
In the Scroll profile, Petronio explains her view of the art: “People think you have to wear a top hat and use a cane to be a tap dancer, but tap really is about using your feet as a percussive instrument.” The idea helps explain what distinguished her approach: rather than treating tap only as steps set in advance, she used rhythm and improvisation to make dance converse with jazz.

Why was she called the “first lady of swing”?
Petronio met Jimmy Slyde in 1971 after seeing him perform with drummer Michael Silva. She learned from the celebrated tap dancer, who urged her to form an identity of her own. Scroll quotes Slyde’s advice: “Don’t dance like me. You are a woman.” He invited her to dance in Paris clubs and perform at European jazz festivals, and called her the “first lady of swing.” The phrase belongs to Slyde; it should not be mistaken for a formal award or an uncontested designation.
The relationship was artistic as well as instructive. Petronio made her solo debut at Paris’s Le Petit Journal in the late 1970s, then performed with Slyde in It’s About Time in 1984. Dance historian Constance Valis Hill, quoted in Scroll from her 2010 book Tap Dancing America: A Cultural History, said Petronio’s footwork blurred “the boundaries between the music and dance”.

How did her work extend beyond the stage?
Petronio’s career moved between performance, teaching and institution-building. Tanzhaus nrw credits her with helping introduce rhythm tap in Europe and with founding Git le Coeur, the Paris Tap Dance Company and the tap-dance department at the American Center in Paris. These contributions make the case for her pioneering role more concretely than the nickname alone.
She and Peter moved to Chicago in 1989. Petronio taught at the Columbia College Chicago Dance Center and, in 1993, produced a jazz tap festival there featuring artists including Slyde, Savion Glover, Ted Levy, Chuck Green and Acia Gray. Scroll reports that she performed at festivals in the United States, Australia, Germany, Japan and Israel. She received the Moscow Tapparade Award in 2003 and the Tap City Hoofer Award in 2005.

For Petronio’s own account, Footwork – My Life In Dance is a memoir about her life and work. Tanzhaus nrw described it in a 2022 event listing as a journey through tap-dance history. For a broader historical perspective, Hill’s Tap Dancing America: A Cultural History places Petronio within the wider tradition. Neither should be confused with a dance-instruction manual.

Scroll’s 2018 profile reported that Petronio had returned to Paris in the mid-1990s, continued performing and stayed engaged with students. Tanzhaus nrw’s 2022 listing documents a book event. Those dated accounts establish activity at those points, but do not establish her residence, health or performance schedule in 2026.

For Chicago Tribune arts critic Howard Reich, as quoted by Scroll, Petronio was “as much jazz artist as stage hoofer, as much actor and mimicry artist, as improvising musician. She performs magic on a very small stage”. That description captures the breadth of a career in which tap was not merely choreography: it was a musical practice shaped by listening, invention and exchange.
