What was Depp paid for On Stranger Tides?
A Hawaii Department of Taxation public testimony document gives a specific figure: $55 million in compensation to Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The document attributes the figure to Forbes reporting and also cites a $410 million total budget for the film. The budget is the film’s overall reported cost, not Depp’s pay. Why reported salary figures may not tell the whole story
Depp’s testimony described a contract covering compensation and merchandising for Pirates 4 and Pirates 5. He also referred to pay and backend compensation negotiated by his agents and lawyers. Was Depp paid $22.5 million for Pirates 6?
No. In 2022 trial testimony, Depp’s manager Jack Whigham described a $22.5 million verbal deal for a sixth film. The Associated Press reported that Whigham acknowledged there was no written agreement and that Disney executives had been noncommittal. TheWrap reported that Disney had decided by 2019 to go in another direction. Because the proposed film was unreleased and the deal was not written, the figure should not be counted as pay received for a Pirates movie.
