Jim Carrey was reportedly paid $20 million to play the Grinch in the 2000 film, according to director Ron Howard, as quoted in a 2025 GamesRadar+ report. The figure is reported rather than verified by a publicly available contract, so the exact payment structure is not established.
What is the reported amount?
GamesRadar+ reported on December 15, 2025, that Howard said the studio was paying Carrey $20 million for the film. The report also recounts make-up effects designer Rick Baker remembering the studio’s instruction: “We’re paying Jim $20 million, and we want to see him. What the figure does—and does not—tell us
The available reporting does not establish whether $20 million was entirely an upfront fee, included any percentage of revenue, or represented Carrey’s total compensation under all contract terms. No primary contract or studio payroll record is publicly identified in the cited coverage. It is therefore safest to describe the amount as a reported payday, not a confirmed accounting of his final earnings.
A contemporaneous 2000 Los Angeles Times article describes an industry arrangement in which a participant might receive a guaranteed upfront fee against a percentage of studio gross box-office revenue. Why the Dr. Seuss rights figures are different
Some coverage of the film’s business can be confusing because the adaptation rights had separate terms. TIME reported in 2000 that bidders seeking the Dr. Seuss material had to pay $5 million and provide shares of certain revenues: 4% of box-office gross, 50% of merchandising revenue and music-related material, and 70% of book tie-in income.
