How Much Money Did Orlando Bloom Make From the Lord of the Rings Movies?

Orlando Bloom is widely reported to have earned $175,000 for the Lord of the Rings trilogy, though one 2019 report says that was his first-film fee before renegotiations.

Orlando Bloom has been widely reported to have received $175,000 for all three original Lord of the Rings films. But the figure’s scope is disputed: a contemporaneous GameSpot report described it as his fee for the first film, followed by renegotiations for the sequels. Public reporting does not establish a complete accounting of Bloom’s compensation.

What was Orlando Bloom reportedly paid?

Metro reported in September 2019 that Bloom received $175,000 for his roles across the trilogy, citing his appearance on The Howard Stern Show. In Metro’s account, Bloom said: “Nothing, I got nothing. 175 grand.” He also described the opportunity as “the greatest gift of my life” and said he would do it again for half the money. Metro’s report attributes those remarks to the interview.

Variety in 2024 and The Guardian in 2025 also characterized the $175,000 as payment for all three movies. Their accounts support the widely repeated trilogy-total version, but they do not resolve the conflicting description published in 2019.

Why do reports disagree about the $175,000?

GameSpot’s September 2019 report said the $175,000 was Bloom’s pay for The Fellowship of the Ring, the first film, and that he renegotiated for The Two Towers and The Return of the King. GameSpot attributed the amount to Bloom’s Howard Stern appearance and its account of later negotiations to The Playlist. That differs from Metro’s description of the same figure as covering all three films. GameSpot’s account does not provide a sequel salary, so it cannot be used to calculate a different trilogy total.

The safest conclusion is that $175,000 is the amount most often reported, usually as the trilogy fee, while one contemporaneous report assigns it to the first film alone. The reports do not provide Bloom’s contracts or a complete compensation ledger, so they do not establish whether that figure includes every possible payment.

Which films and earnings does the figure refer to?

Bloom played Legolas in The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, released between 2001 and 2003. The official Howard Stern Show page confirms Bloom’s September 4, 2019 appearance and says the production involved moving to New Zealand for 18 months to film all three movies at once; its accessible text does not state his salary.

The Guardian reported the trilogy’s worldwide box office at $2.96 billion in 2025. That is the films’ gross, not Bloom’s pay or evidence that he received a share of it. The Guardian’s report repeats the $175,000 figure as covering all three films.

What is not known about Bloom’s total compensation?

The public reports cited here do not disclose the contract terms or establish a complete total that accounts for possible renegotiated fees, residuals, backend participation or other payments. They also do not support dividing $175,000 into an exact per-film amount or claiming Bloom received no additional compensation.
