Base your upload requirement on the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate, not on the fact that the program is a radio show. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate: a 6 Mbps stream therefore calls for about 7.2 Mbps of available upload capacity. If you send a backup stream at the same time, add its bitrate before calculating the headroom.
Calculate the upload speed your stream needs
- Find the encoder’s total output bitrate. Include video and audio, and use the actual configured bitrate for your stream.
- Add any simultaneous backup stream. If you send a primary and backup feed at once, count both bitrates.
- Add 20% headroom. Multiply the combined bitrate by 1.2. For example, a single 6 Mbps stream needs about 7.2 Mbps of available upload capacity.
- Compare that figure with your measured upload speed. Test upstream speed specifically; download speed is not a substitute.
The 20% margin is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that a stream will be stable on every connection. Other network use and interruptions can reduce the capacity available to your encoder. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Use YouTube’s settings for a practical target
YouTube’s live encoder guidance varies by codec, resolution and frame rate. The examples below use YouTube’s current H.264 recommended video bitrates, accessed in 2026, with YouTube’s 20% headroom applied. They are useful planning figures, not measurements of your internet service. For a particular setup, calculate from the encoder’s actual total output bitrate.
| H.264 video setting | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | Upload target with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 9.6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 9.6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 16.8 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 20.4 Mbps |
These targets apply the margin to the listed video recommendation; your full stream also includes audio. YouTube’s H.264 live guidance specifies CBR and AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo. The recommended bitrate table differs by codec, so select the right row for your ingestion codec rather than mixing figures from YouTube’s separate upload-video encoding guidance. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the relevant codec and resolution.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does a radio livestream need less bandwidth?
Not necessarily. A YouTube radio livestream is still sent as a video stream, even if its visual is a static image or a simple graphic. Audio alone does not determine the network requirement: the encoder’s complete outgoing stream setting is the useful basis. A static visual may allow a lower configured video bitrate than detailed or changing footage, but choose a suitable setting for the actual production and use YouTube’s guidance for the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec.
Check the connection before going live
- Measure upload speed. YouTube notes that inbound speed is often higher than outbound speed, so a download result cannot establish whether your connection can send the stream.
- Test realistic conditions. Run a test with audio and visual movement similar to the broadcast. Other people using the same network can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder.
- Monitor stream health. A speed-test result is only a snapshot. Check YouTube’s stream health during the broadcast and adjust if the connection cannot sustain the configured output.
- Prefer Ethernet for a computer stream. YouTube recommends a wired connection for live streaming from a computer. Ethernet can reduce Wi-Fi variability, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet plan. See YouTube’s filming tips for live streams.
Common bandwidth problems and fixes
Upload speed is below the calculated target
Reduce the configured stream bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again. Make sure you are comparing upload capacity with the total output bitrate plus headroom, not with download speed.

The speed test looks sufficient but the stream still falters
Retest while other devices and applications are using the network. Check the encoder’s actual output and whether a backup stream is being sent; both affect the total bandwidth requirement. For a computer-based broadcast, try Ethernet and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
The settings table does not match your encoder
Confirm the ingestion codec, resolution and frame rate before choosing a recommendation. YouTube’s live guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with different bitrate recommendations. Use the matching live-ingestion guidance and base your margin calculation on the stream your encoder actually sends.
