How Much RAM Do You Need for Live Streaming?

OBS lists 4 GB RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended, but actual streaming performance depends on the workload and the rest of the system.

For OBS Studio, the store listing gives 4 GB of RAM as a minimum and 8 GB as recommended. Those are software-level requirements, not a guarantee that a computer can stream smoothly. There is no established universal RAM amount for live streaming: the work you do alongside OBS, your encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all matter.

What OBS’s RAM figures do—and don’t—tell you

The OBS Studio store listing states 4 GB RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended for its listed Windows and macOS requirements. The listing’s publication date is not shown in the available information, and these figures are not workload-specific recommendations for streaming a game, recording locally, or running complex scenes.

OBS’s official system requirements article, dated August 25, 2021, does not specify a RAM capacity. It cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” In other words, meeting the listed minimum—or even the recommended baseline—does not prove that a particular setup will perform well.

How your streaming workload changes the answer

There is no official RAM-by-workload chart for the combinations below. Use them to identify what to test on your own computer, not as evidence for a specific capacity requirement.

What you plan to do What to consider
Run OBS with a simple scene This is a lighter workload than running a game and a more elaborate production at the same time, but the available guidance does not give a measured RAM requirement for it.
Stream while gaming Consider the game and OBS together. A requirement for OBS alone does not establish what the combined setup needs.
Stream and record locally Local recording adds another task to the streaming workflow. The available guidance does not quantify its additional memory use.
Use multiple sources or browser-based overlays Scene complexity is one factor OBS identifies when discussing system demands, but no source provides a RAM figure for a particular scene.

OBS says CPU requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Twitch also notes that x264 encoding is CPU-intensive and that higher resolution and frame rate require more encoding power. Those statements explain why RAM alone cannot predict whether a stream will run well; they do not establish extra RAM amounts.

Don’t confuse system RAM with VRAM

System RAM is the computer’s main memory. VRAM is memory on the graphics card. Twitch’s guidance for 1440p and dual-format streaming includes GPU and other requirements, but does not state a system RAM requirement. A GPU or VRAM requirement should not be treated as a RAM recommendation.

How to decide whether to upgrade

  1. Check the software baseline. Compare your computer’s installed RAM with the OBS Studio store listing: 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended. Treat those figures as the listing’s requirements, not as a promise of smooth performance for your workload.
  2. Write down what runs during a stream. Include OBS, any game, local recording, scene sources, and browser-based overlays. The more you run together, the less useful an OBS-only baseline is as a prediction.
  3. Assess the whole setup. OBS’s stated factors include encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Check these alongside RAM rather than assuming that a memory upgrade by itself will resolve performance problems.
  4. Check upgrade compatibility before buying. Confirm the memory type, form factor, and supported capacity for your computer or motherboard. Desktop DIMMs and laptop SO-DIMMs, as well as different memory generations, are not interchangeable. Without the exact PC or motherboard model, no particular kit can be recommended.

What high-resolution guidance says about RAM

Twitch’s surfaced 1440p guidance names OBS Studio 32.0 or newer, GPU, operating-system, display-resolution, and upstream-bandwidth requirements. Its dual-format guidance lists supported broadcast software, GPU and driver, upstream bandwidth, and track counts. Neither surfaced set of requirements states a system RAM amount, so they cannot settle how much RAM a particular 1440p or dual-format setup needs.

When an always-on YouTube video does not need your PC

If your goal is to keep an uploaded video looping on YouTube rather than stream from a camera or run a game, StreamNeo is a different option: it runs the video from the cloud, so your computer does not have to stay on. It does not increase your PC’s RAM or replace OBS for a live camera or gameplay production.
