The Sovereign Grant funds the Royal Household’s official work and occupied-palace maintenance; it is not paid to individual royals. The King and Prince of Wales also receive income through separate Duchy arrangements, while their private income is not fully disclosed in comparable member-by-member figures. The answer depends on whether “make” means public funding, estate income, personal income or wealth.
How much public funding does the Royal Household receive?
The Sovereign Grant is provided by HM Treasury to support the King’s official duties and the upkeep of occupied royal palaces. It goes to the Royal Household, not to each royal as a personal salary. The Royal Household reported a grant of £86.3 million for financial year 2024–25 and £132.1 million for 2025–26. These are annual funding amounts for different financial years, not individual earnings. Royal Household
The increase reflects the grant’s statutory calculation, which is linked to Crown Estate income-account net surplus. For the 2025–26 calculation, the rate was 12%; the process also includes a floor based on the previous grant and a reserve test. The Crown Estate is not the King’s private property, and its profits are not personal earnings. HM Treasury’s review of the Sovereign Grant rate
What the next grant figures mean
The Royal Household and Parliament state that the Sovereign Grant is £137.9 million for 2026–27. Parliament also reports a planned £99.9 million amount for 2027–28 after a rate reset, but says legislation is needed: current law prevents the grant from falling below the previous year’s amount. The latter figure is therefore conditional, not a settled amount under current law. UK Parliament briefing on the Sovereign Grant

How the King’s income differs from the grant
The King’s Privy Purse includes income associated with the Duchy of Lancaster. The Duchy is held for the Sovereign in that role and is separate from the Crown Estate. The Royal Household says its income supports both official and private expenditure, and mainly covers official expenses that the Sovereign Grant does not meet, including some expenses incurred by other members of the Royal Family. The King also has personal income from investments and private estates for private expenses. Royal Household explanation of royal finances
The reviewed official material does not establish a current annual Duchy of Lancaster surplus that can be stated here as the King’s personal salary. Nor should the Sovereign Grant and Lancaster income be added together and presented as a personal-pay figure: they serve different purposes, and Lancaster income also meets official costs.
How the Prince of Wales is funded
The Prince of Wales’s life and work are funded predominantly by the Duchy of Cornwall. He receives its annual net surplus and uses a large proportion for public and charitable work. The estate is held in trust; its capital assets are not his to sell. The Prince of Wales does not receive money from the Sovereign Grant, although the grant helps support his official activities. Royal Household explanation of royal finances
The official material cited here does not state the latest Duchy of Cornwall net surplus, so it does not support a current annual figure for the Prince of Wales’s income. An estate’s capital and the annual surplus it generates are different measures.

What the King’s tax bills do—and do not—show
The Royal Household reported that the King’s tax bill was £11.7 million for 2023–24 and £12.9 million for 2024–25. Those are tax figures for the stated years, not a measure of gross income. They cannot be used to calculate what he “made” without further information about taxable income, deductions and other finances. Royal Household explanation of royal finances

Royal finances include distinct kinds of money: public funding for official work, income from the Duchies, and personal income from investments or private estates. These amounts do not all go to the same recipient or serve the same purpose. The official sources cited here do not disclose a complete, comparable schedule of annual private income for every member of the Royal Family. That means there is no well-supported member-by-member salary ranking to give from those sources.
