A useful estimate is GB per hour ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 0.45. For example, a 10 Mbps stream uses about 4.5 decimal GB per hour for encoded video and audio, before allowing for network overhead or carrier-accounting differences.
Estimate data use from bitrate and runtime
Multiply the average outgoing bitrate by the number of hours, then by 0.45:
Estimated GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × hours × 0.45
This conversion uses 8 bits per byte and decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000 MB). It estimates the encoded stream at the stated average bitrate; it is not a measurement of everything your phone or carrier may count. Leave extra data available for protocol overhead, retransmissions and variation.
Worked examples
- At 4 Mbps for one hour: 4 × 1 × 0.45 = about 1.8 GB.
- At 10 Mbps for two hours: 10 × 2 × 0.45 = about 9 GB.
- At 12 Mbps for 30 minutes: 12 × 0.5 × 0.45 = about 2.7 GB.
Approximate use at YouTube’s H.264 recommended bitrates
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists recommended bitrates for different resolutions and frame rates. The hourly data estimates below are calculations from its H.264 bitrate column, not data-use measurements published by YouTube or Softvelum.

For two hours, double the hourly estimate. These are planning figures based on the listed bitrate, not a guarantee of the amount that will appear on a phone’s data counter. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance also gives recommendations for other codecs and settings.
Why actual Larix data use can differ
Bitrate and duration
The configured or default bitrate is the encoder’s target. Softvelum says that, in general, Larix publishes at that target. A longer broadcast increases the basic estimate in proportion to its runtime. Read Softvelum’s Larix FAQ for its explanation of bitrate behavior.

Adaptive bitrate and network conditions
Larix offers adaptive bitrate when network conditions are poor, so the rate may vary rather than remain at a fixed target. The Larix FAQ does not give a universal percentage by which adaptive bitrate reduces data use. Treat it as a way to respond to changing connectivity, not as a promised data-saving amount.
Resolution, frame rate and codec
Higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate settings can call for different bitrates. The YouTube estimates above specifically use the H.264 recommendations; they should not be applied as exact figures to every codec or configuration.

Overhead and carrier accounting
The cited guidance does not establish one extra percentage for network overhead, retransmissions or how mobile carriers count usage. Your carrier’s total can therefore differ from the encoded-stream estimate.
How to plan a mobile-data allowance
- Check Larix’s outgoing settings. Note the video bitrate, resolution and frame rate you plan to send.
- Calculate expected runtime. Multiply bitrate in Mbps by hours and by 0.45 for an approximate decimal GB estimate.
- Choose a sustainable upload rate. YouTube recommends a speed test and representative pre-stream testing; check stream health while broadcasting. See YouTube’s encoder recommendations and its guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Leave a margin. If your plan limit is strict, run a test with representative content and compare your phone or carrier data counter before and after. A test gives a more useful estimate for your particular setup than assuming the formula predicts the exact billable total.
