The dependable answer for your setup comes from measuring it at the wall while it streams. To estimate energy or cost once you know the average draw, use watts Ă— hours Ă· 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours (kWh), then multiply kWh by your electricity rate.
What Apple’s power figures do—and do not—tell you
Apple’s support table reports power measured at the wall, including power-supply and system losses. Its “Idle” condition is Finder open with default power-management settings; “CPU Max” uses a compute-intensive application to maximize processor use. Neither condition is the same as browser-based YouTube playback, and a maximum figure should not be treated as expected continuous use. Apple’s Mac mini power-consumption table was accessed in 2026.
| Listed configuration | Idle | Maximum figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac mini (2024), M4, 16 GB memory, 256 GB SSD | 4 W | 65 W | Idle and maximum reference values, not a YouTube-streaming average. [Apple Support] |
| Mac mini (2024), M4 Pro, 64 GB memory, 8 TB SSD | 5 W | 140 W | Idle and maximum reference values, not a YouTube-streaming average. [Apple Support] |
| Mac mini (2023), M2, 24 GB memory, 2 TB SSD | 7 W | 50 W CPU maximum | The maximum is specifically a CPU maximum. [Apple Support] |
| Mac mini (2023), M2 Pro, 32 GB memory, 8 TB SSD | 7 W | 100 W CPU maximum | The maximum is specifically a CPU maximum. [Apple Support] |
| Mac mini (M1, 2020), 16 GB memory, 2 TB SSD | 6.8 W | 39 W CPU maximum | The maximum is specifically a CPU maximum. [Apple Support] |
Apple’s October 2024 M4 Mac mini Product Environmental Report gives idle-display-on readings of 3.92 W at 100 V, 3.96 W at 115 V and 4.01 W at 230 V. These closely align with the rounded 4 W support-table figure; the report’s off and sleep readings describe different states, not active playback.
ENERGY STAR’s certification record for the listed 16 GB M4 configuration reports 2.8 W short idle, 2.4 W long idle, 0.6 W sleep and 0.1 W off. It was certified on 2025-10-16 for U.S. and Canada markets. These categories and test conditions differ from Apple’s idle-display-on figure, so they should not be collapsed into one universal idle value.

Apple’s technical specifications also list 155 W maximum continuous power for Mac mini. That is a product specification, not typical draw and not a YouTube result; it is separate from the model-specific power-consumption figures above. Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications.
Estimate daily and monthly electricity use
Use this conversion: watts × hours ÷ 1,000 = kWh. For 24/7 operation over 30 days, multiply average watts by 720 hours and divide by 1,000. The examples below are arithmetic scenarios only. The 4 W and 5 W inputs are Apple’s idle figures, not streaming measurements; 10 W and 15 W are illustrative assumptions, not sourced consumption claims.

| Assumed average draw | Energy per 24 hours | Energy over 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 4 W | 0.096 kWh | 2.88 kWh |
| 5 W | 0.120 kWh | 3.60 kWh |
| 10 W | 0.240 kWh | 7.20 kWh |
| 15 W | 0.360 kWh | 10.80 kWh |
Estimate the electricity cost by multiplying the resulting kWh by your own price per kWh. For example, if your measured setup uses 7.2 kWh over a month, multiply 7.2 by the tariff on your bill. Rates vary by location and plan, so a local rate is needed for a meaningful cost estimate.
Measure the actual 24/7 streaming setup
A plug-in electricity meter at the wall is the practical way to answer what your Mac mini consumes in your specific continuous-playback arrangement. Measure after the setup has settled into normal operation and over a representative period; a single brief reading may not reflect the average.

- Plug the meter into the wall outlet and connect the Mac mini’s power supply to the meter.
- Decide whether the measurement should include only the Mac mini or also a display, external drives, speakers or other equipment. Connect only the devices you intend to count.
- Run the same YouTube playback arrangement you plan to keep running, including the same display state and connected equipment, for a representative period.
- Record the meter’s average watts or cumulative kWh, along with the duration and which devices were included.
- If the meter reports average watts, calculate kWh as average watts Ă— hours Ă· 1,000. If it reports cumulative kWh, use that reading directly for the measured interval.
- Multiply the measured kWh by your electricity price per kWh to estimate cost for that interval. Scale to a 30-day estimate only if the measured period is representative of normal use.
For comparisons across Mac mini generations or configurations, keep the power state or workload, connected display and peripherals, measurement boundary, and averaging period consistent. The available Apple figures provide references for idle and maximum conditions; they do not establish directly comparable YouTube-streaming tests.
What can make your measurement differ
Resolution, browser, display state, attached equipment and network activity are all setup details worth recording when you measure. The published sources do not quantify how much each changes Mac mini power use during continuous YouTube playback, so do not apply a universal wattage adjustment for any of them.

Quick Recap
Common measurement mistakes
- Using the idle figure as the answer: Apple’s idle test is Finder open, not YouTube playback. Measure the actual stream instead.
- Treating maximum power as normal use: maximum and CPU-maximum values describe specific high-load conditions, not typical continuous consumption.
- Counting the wrong equipment: a meter reading that includes a display or external devices is a system total. Include those devices consistently or measure the Mac mini alone.
- Adding power-supply losses to Apple’s values: Apple says its published watt measurements are already taken at the wall and include power-supply and system losses.
- Projecting from a short or unusual period: record the duration and operating conditions, and use a representative interval before estimating a month.
