There is no reliable single electricity cost for a 24/7 YouTube stream based only on the words “Ryzen 5.” The relevant number is the whole desktop’s average power draw at the wall while streaming. Multiply that reading by your electricity rate to estimate the variable energy cost.
Calculate the electricity cost from measured watts
A computer running continuously for a 365-day year operates for 8,760 hours. If its average wall draw is P watts:
- Annual energy: P × 8.76 kWh
- Annual variable cost: P × 8.76 × your price per kWh
- Average monthly variable cost: annual variable cost ÷ 12
Use the electricity price on your own bill or tariff, expressed in dollars per kWh (or convert your local rate to the same units as your bill). This estimates energy charges that vary with consumption; it does not include fixed monthly fees or other bill components that may not change when the computer runs.
A worked benchmark—not a Ryzen desktop measurement
At the U.S. 2025 annual average residential price of 17.30¢/kWh, each continuous 10W of average draw uses 87.6 kWh a year and costs about $15.15 annually, or $1.26 per average month. This is an arithmetic scaling example, not a measurement of a Ryzen 5 desktop. It assumes the average draw remains constant for all 8,760 hours. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that annual average for 2025 using preliminary February 2026 Electric Power Monthly data: EIA electricity data.

For context, the EIA’s 2025 state prices ranged from 8.20¢/kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢/kWh in Hawaii across all customer types; these endpoints are not a residential-only comparison. A household’s actual tariff may differ from the national average and from those state figures.
Why Ryzen 5 TDP does not tell you the stream’s cost
“Ryzen 5” covers different processors and does not specify the rest of the desktop or its streaming workload. A processor’s thermal design power (TDP) is not a measurement of the complete computer’s power at the wall while encoding and streaming. For example, AMD lists a 65W default TDP for the Ryzen 5 8605G, with configurable TDP of 45–65W; that figure is for the processor, not a whole-system wall reading. Do not multiply a CPU’s TDP by 24 hours and call the result the desktop’s measured streaming cost. The relevant average depends on the complete hardware and the actual stream configuration, including resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoding path. “Ryzen 5” alone does not establish those details or a universal wattage.
How to get a useful wall-power reading
- Set up the intended stream. Use the resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoding method you expect to run continuously.
- Run a representative test. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health during the event. Take the power reading while that intended stream is configured and running, rather than substituting CPU TDP. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
- Measure the complete desktop at the wall. Use an appropriate plug-in electricity monitor, or an energy meter you already have, to obtain average watts or energy use during the test. A brief idle reading will not represent a continuously encoding stream.
- Apply your tariff. Put the average watts into the formula above and use the per-kWh rate from your bill. If your tariff varies by time, an estimate should account for the rates and hours that apply to the stream.
Streaming settings affect the workload, not a published power estimate
YouTube’s encoder recommendations specify video settings and bitrates, but they do not state how many watts a particular Ryzen 5 desktop will use. For 1080p at 30 fps, YouTube lists recommended bitrates of 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. These are encoder bitrates—not electrical power figures—and do not establish a universal cost. The stream’s actual encoding setup and complete PC configuration matter.

YouTube also says it automatically transcodes a live stream into output formats for viewers. That platform-side transcoding guidance is not a measurement of the power used by the creator’s desktop. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations when choosing stream settings, then measure the computer under those settings.
