The cost depends on whether you need only a cloud encoder to send your feed to YouTube or a larger system that also packages and delivers video directly to viewers. Those are different architectures with different cost drivers.
First define what “cloud hosting” includes
A cloud encoder runs the stream and sends it to YouTube using YouTube’s live server URL and stream key. YouTube then transcodes the incoming live stream into formats for viewers. A more extensive media pipeline may add packaging, origination and a separate viewer-delivery service. A price for that full pipeline is not a price for an encoder-only YouTube stream.
- Encoder-only: Estimate the cloud resources that produce and push the stream, for every hour they run.
- Full media pipeline: Add packaging and any separate distribution charges if your design actually uses those services.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the server URL and stream key workflow. Its live encoder settings guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. These setup details do not set the price of a cloud server.
What AWS’s published example does—and does not—tell you
AWS estimates about $69.74 for a one-hour SD 540p live event with approximately 1,000 viewers in US East (N. Virginia): $2.50 for live encoding and packaging, plus $67.24 for distribution. Distribution accounts for most of that example’s total. It is an architecture- and audience-specific event estimate, not a monthly quote for an always-on YouTube podcast stream. Do not multiply it by 24 hours and present the result as your likely YouTube cost. See the AWS Live Streaming on AWS cost example.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Build a useful monthly estimate
Price a specific configuration for the actual hours it will run, and label the estimate as encoder-only or as including viewer-facing distribution. For a stream intended to stay live all month, include continuous runtime rather than counting only hours with active viewers.
| Cost factor | What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime | Hours the resource is scheduled to run each month | AWS says MediaLive charges continue while a channel is running, even if it is not receiving input or producing output. |
| Encoding profile | Resolution, bitrate, frame rate, codec, and number of outputs | These affect live encoding prices. |
| Architecture | Encoder alone, or encoder plus packaging/origination and distribution | Each additional service can add charges; AWS’s event example separates these components. |
| Audience delivery | Whether a separate service delivers video to viewers, and the expected audience | Distribution was the largest charge in the cited AWS example; that does not mean every YouTube setup incurs that charge. |
| Resilience | Single or redundant processing | Redundancy can increase resource use. AWS describes standard MediaLive channels as using two processing pipelines in different availability zones. |
| Region and pricing terms | Deployment region and pay-as-you-go or eligible commitment pricing | Rates and available pricing choices vary. AWS’s example uses US East (N. Virginia), so it is not a universal regional quote. |
Use the provider’s current calculator or pricing page with those details. AWS’s MediaLive pricing page describes resource-based pricing and says eligible reserved pricing with a 12-month commitment can save up to 75% versus on-demand. That is a stated potential saving, not a guaranteed discount for every configuration; confirm current regional rates and eligibility before budgeting.

Managed service or cloud infrastructure?
YouTube’s verified encoder directory includes AWS Elemental MediaLive and identifies Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous streaming of prerecorded videos. YouTube notes that listed encoder products are not made by YouTube. The directory confirms these service categories exist, but it does not establish current plan prices or which option is cheapest for a podcast.
