To estimate the energy charge, multiply 21.6 by your applicable electricity rate per kWh. For illustration, Lakshadweep’s FY 2026–27 domestic rates put that usage at about â‚ą77 at â‚ą3.55/kWh or â‚ą114 at â‚ą5.30/kWh. These are energy-charge examples, not a prediction of your total bill: Indian tariffs vary by location, tariff category, slab and subsidy.
How the 30-watt estimate is calculated
Thirty watts is 0.03 kilowatts. Assuming the complete setup averages that draw at the wall throughout operation:
- Per day: 0.03 kW Ă— 24 hours = 0.72 kWh.
- In 30 days: 0.72 kWh Ă— 30 = 21.6 kWh.
- In 365 days: 0.72 kWh Ă— 365 = 262.8 kWh, equivalent to 21.9 kWh per average month when divided by 12.
These are arithmetic results from the 30 W assumption, not a measurement of a particular laptop or published statistic about YouTube streams.
What that could add to an electricity bill
The Department of Electricity, Union Territory of Lakshadweep, lists domestic energy rates of ₹3.55/kWh for the 0–100-unit slab and ₹5.30/kWh for the 101–200-unit slab in its FY 2026–27 tariff schedule. Multiplying the full 21.6 kWh example by each rate gives:

These examples apply one rate to all the example usage for straightforward comparison. If your household crosses a telescopic slab, portions may be billed at different rates. The estimate covers energy charges only; fixed charges, duties, adjustments and other bill components are excluded. The applicable amount also depends on your consumption, tariff category and any subsidy.
Why there is no single India-wide cost
The Ministry of Power stated in a written reply published by the Press Information Bureau on 10 August 2026: “Electricity tariffs in India are determined by the Appropriate Electricity Regulatory Commissions under the Electricity Act, 2003.” The reply also says that “State Governments may provide subsidy to any class of consumers including domestic consumers in the tariff determined by the State Commission.” Accordingly, a Lakshadweep example should not be treated as a national rate.

For your own estimate, check the tariff schedule that applies to your state or Union Territory, distribution company and domestic consumer category. Your bill or utility’s tariff information can help identify the relevant slab, per-unit charge and subsidy. The Central Electricity Authority’s Electricity Tariff & Duty and Average Rates of Electricity Supply in India compendium documents state-specific schedules and effective dates; for example, its Uttar Pradesh entry identifies domestic rates effective 17 October 2024. Rates and effective dates differ, so use the schedule relevant to your service and billing period rather than combining figures from different jurisdictions.
Check whether your laptop really averages 30 W
The 30 W input must represent the complete setup’s average wall draw while it is running—not the maximum rating printed on the laptop’s power adapter. That rating alone does not show the laptop’s continuous consumption during a stream.

If you do not know the draw, an optional plug-in electricity usage monitor can help you measure the operating setup over a representative period. Use its measured kWh for the period, or calculate an average wattage from the reading, then apply the relevant tariff. Measuring is useful when 30 W is only a guess; it is not required to perform the calculation. Electricity billing is based on measured energy use in kWh, as discussed in Ministry of Power material on consumer metering and billing rules.
Estimate your own cost
- Find the average wall draw. Measure the complete laptop-and-streaming setup under its normal workload if the draw is uncertain.
- Convert watts to kilowatts. Divide watts by 1,000. For 30 W, that is 0.03 kW.
- Calculate energy for your period. Multiply kW by operating hours. At 30 W, 24 hours uses 0.72 kWh; multiply that by the number of days to estimate a longer period.
- Apply your tariff. Multiply the relevant kWh by the applicable marginal energy rate, accounting for slab rules where necessary.
- Separate energy charges from the total bill. Fixed charges, duties, adjustments and subsidies may change the bill impact beyond this multiplication.
