Earnings depend on how a creator monetizes, which views and revenue qualify, audience location, and other factors; YouTube says its Partner Program agreement does not guarantee that a creator will be paid or how much. The most reliable figure for an individual channel is its own YouTube Studio Analytics—not a universal “average RPM.”
Why views alone don’t determine YouTube income
A view count is not a fixed payout formula. YouTube’s revenue shares apply to different revenue bases, and eligibility, ad activity, audience, and monetization route all affect what a creator actually receives. A percentage share is not a promised amount per view or per 1,000 views.
YouTube does not publish a representative median or average annual income for YouTubers or a universal RPM. Its 2025 statement that it had paid $70 billion to creators, artists, and media companies over three years describes aggregate platform payouts, not typical earnings. Likewise, YouTube reported 3 million channels in the Partner Program in 2025; that figure does not establish how much an individual channel makes.
How YouTube’s main revenue shares work
| Revenue route | Creator share and what it applies to | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Long-form watch-page ads | 55% of net revenue from ads displayed or streamed on eligible public videos’ watch pages, including qualifying embeds, for partners who accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. | It is not 55% of a fixed per-view rate, nor a guaranteed RPM. |
| Shorts Feed ads | 45% of the revenue allocated to an eligible creator from the Shorts Creator Pool, for partners who accept the Shorts Monetization Module. | It is not 45% of the same revenue base used for watch-page videos. |
| Fan funding | 70% of net revenue from channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks for partners who accept the Commerce Product Module. | The percentage does not predict how many viewers will contribute or the final amount. |
YouTube’s partner earnings overview describes these shares and their bases. Comparing the percentages without their different bases is misleading.

Why Shorts calculations differ
Shorts Feed ad revenue is pooled monthly. The Creator Pool allocation reflects eligible engaged views and music usage; a creator’s share of the overall pool is based on that creator’s share of eligible engaged Shorts views in each country. Music licensing can reduce the revenue attributed to the pool before YouTube applies the creator’s 45% share to the allocation. Shorts monetization is separate from watch-page monetization. YouTube’s Shorts monetization policies explain the pool and allocation process.
Other ways creators may earn
Ad revenue is only one possible part of a creator’s business. YouTube identifies several other routes, each with its own eligibility and audience or sales requirements:

- YouTube Premium: eligible creators may receive an allocation associated with Premium members watching their content; it is not a uniform payment per view.
- Channel memberships and live-stream features: viewers may pay for memberships or use Super Chat and Super Stickers, subject to eligibility and the Commerce Product Module.
- Super Thanks: viewers can make eligible one-time contributions on supported content.
- Merchandise and product sales: creators can sell their own products, and eligible creators may use YouTube Shopping affiliate features. Income depends on sales and program terms.
- Brand partnerships: sponsored work is a commercial arrangement negotiated between a creator and a brand, rather than a standard YouTube per-view payment.
YouTube’s 2025 article on ways to monetize on YouTube identifies these routes. The platform reported more than 500,000 creators enrolled in YouTube Shopping globally as of July 2025, but that participation figure does not show what any creator earned.
Who can earn, and when eligibility rules change
Eligibility thresholds are time-sensitive and differ by monetization feature. YouTube’s February 3, 2025 explainer described an entry tier for fan-funding features and own-product promotion: 500 subscribers plus either 3,000 long-form watch hours or 3 million Shorts views. It described ad-revenue-sharing thresholds as 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views. These are thresholds as presented in that dated explainer, not a substitute for checking current requirements in YouTube’s terms and Studio.

YouTube announced changes scheduled to take effect on February 1, 2027. Under the announced terms, monthly Shorts ad and Premium revenue sharing will require 10 million qualified Shorts views in the preceding 90 days. New YPP applicants seeking ad and Premium revenue sharing will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in the previous 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the preceding 90 days. YouTube said the new entry thresholds will not affect creators already in YPP. These are upcoming rules as of October 3, 2026, not thresholds already in effect. See YouTube’s August 10, 2026 YPP announcement for the announced changes.
How to check what your channel actually earned
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Analytics. Review estimated revenue for the channel or the content and period you want to assess. Your own Analytics is more useful than applying an internet-wide RPM estimate.
- Treat estimated revenue as provisional. YouTube says estimates can change because of invalid traffic, Content ID claims or disputes, and some campaign types.
- Check AdSense for YouTube for finalized earnings. Finalized earnings for the prior month generally appear between the 7th and 12th of the current month.
- Account for tax withholding and local obligations. Applicable withholding can change the amount received. Tax obligations depend on your country or region; consult the relevant tax authority or a qualified tax professional for advice specific to you.
See YouTube’s partner earnings overview for how estimates and finalized earnings are handled.

How to interpret public earnings claims
- Ask whether a stated number is estimated revenue, finalized earnings, or total creator-business income.
- Check whether it refers to watch-page ads, Shorts, fan funding, sponsorships, or several routes combined.
- Look for the channel’s time period, audience context, and the person or source behind the figure. One creator’s example is not a universal rate.
- Do not divide a platform-wide payout total by views or channels and treat the result as a typical creator income; those figures do not establish a representative earnings average.
Keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 is a separate operating choice
A continuous stream does not guarantee more revenue, and the earnings rules above do not create a special per-view rate for always-on channels. If your documentary channel uses uploaded recordings in a continuous YouTube stream, you still need the rights to the footage, music, and other material, and YouTube’s monetization policies continue to apply. Reused material and copyright issues can affect whether content is eligible and whether estimated revenue is adjusted.
For a cloud option that loops uploaded videos to YouTube, StreamNeo keeps the stream running without leaving a computer or home connection on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there is no re-encode or quality tier. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
