How Much Bandwidth Does a YouTube Premiere Need for a Long Video?

A YouTube Premiere does not consume your upload bandwidth like a live broadcast. Estimate upload time from the encoded file size and sustained upstream speed, and upload early enough for processing.

A YouTube Premiere does not need a continuous upload stream from you while it plays. You upload the video to YouTube ahead of time; viewers watch YouTube’s playback together at the scheduled time. Your internet upload capacity matters for transferring the video file beforehand—not because the video is long, and not as a live-encoder bitrate requirement.

What uses your bandwidth—and when

A Premiere is a shared viewing of a video that has already been uploaded. YouTube’s workflow is to select and upload the video, add its details, then publish it immediately as a Premiere or schedule it for later. During the scheduled viewing, YouTube delivers playback to viewers; the creator does not have to send the video continuously from their own connection. YouTube’s Premiere instructions describe that workflow.

There are three different rates that are easy to confuse:

  • Video encoding bitrate describes how much data the video represents per second of playback. It affects the encoded file’s size.
  • Internet upload speed describes how quickly your connection can transfer that file to YouTube.
  • Live-stream ingestion bitrate is the continuous rate an encoder sends during a separate live broadcast.

A long runtime alone cannot tell you how much upload bandwidth you need. File size also depends on the encoding settings and video content. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding bitrates are useful context for file creation, but they are not minimum broadband upload speeds.

Estimate upload time from the file size

For a rough ideal estimate, divide the file’s size in bits by your sustained upload rate in bits per second. The result is the transfer time in seconds. In practice, allow extra time: throughput varies, and other activity on your network can compete for capacity.

  1. Find the encoded file size. Use the actual export file, rather than estimating from runtime alone.
  2. Measure your upstream rate. Use a speed test under conditions similar to the upload, and treat its result as an estimate rather than a guaranteed sustained rate.
  3. Estimate the transfer duration. Convert the file size to bits and divide by the upload rate in bits per second. For example, a 10 GB decimal file is about 80 gigabits; at a sustained 10 Mbps, the ideal transfer time is about 2 hours 13 minutes. Actual transfer can take longer.
  4. Schedule with a margin. Upload early enough to accommodate a slower transfer and YouTube processing. The official help pages do not promise one processing duration that applies to every video.

What YouTube’s upload bitrate recommendations mean

YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for SDR video give these video bitrates. The page does not state a publication year. These figures describe the video encode—not the internet speed your connection must provide.

Upload resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended video encoding bitrate
1080p, standard frame rates (24, 25, 30 fps) 8 Mbps
1080p, high frame rates (48, 50, 60 fps) 12 Mbps
2160p/4K, standard frame rates 35–45 Mbps
2160p/4K, high frame rates 53–68 Mbps

For instance, a 60-minute video encoded at a particular bitrate will generally have a larger file than the same-duration video encoded at a lower bitrate, all else being equal. But the encoding bitrate is not your required ISP upload rate: the file is transferred over time, rather than being sent in real time during the Premiere.

Premiere resolution limit: plan for 1080p or lower

YouTube’s Premiere workflow says output above 1080p is unsupported. It also excludes 360/VR180 video and Shorts. Although YouTube publishes 4K upload encoding recommendations, those figures do not mean a 4K Premiere is supported. Check the current Premiere requirements when preparing the video.

If you are also running a separate live broadcast

A Premiere itself does not need a live encoder. If you choose to broadcast a separate live stream around the event, then live-stream ingestion bandwidth matters. Use YouTube’s live encoder guidance for the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and codec; bitrate recommendations differ between H.264, AV1, and H.265.

For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. The live encoder settings table contains recommendations for other configurations. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate with representative motion and audio, then monitoring stream health during the broadcast.

Allow capacity for primary and backup streams

YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams. If a separate live broadcast uses a 10 Mbps primary stream and a 10 Mbps backup, the arithmetic is 20 Mbps × 1.2, or about 24 Mbps of available upload capacity. That is an example applying YouTube’s guidance, not a separate platform-published threshold. Leave room for other devices and traffic sharing the connection.

Use a reliable network path

For computer-based live streaming, YouTube recommends an Ethernet connection. A cable can improve the reliability of the path between your computer and router, but it does not increase the upload capacity provided by your ISP. See YouTube’s filming tips for live streaming and streaming tips.

Before scheduling a long-video Premiere

  • Export to a Premiere-supported output of 1080p or lower.
  • Check the actual file size and estimate upload time using measured upstream speed, not runtime alone.
  • Upload well before the scheduled start so there is time for transfer and processing; no universal processing-time guarantee is stated in YouTube’s official guidance.
  • If you will also run a live broadcast, configure it separately using the encoder table for its codec, resolution, and frame rate, and test the connection with the expected content.
  • For a live broadcast, account for backup-stream bitrate and other network use; monitor stream health while live.

Troubleshooting upload and live-stream problems

The upload is taking longer than expected

Compare the actual file size with your sustained upstream rate. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of continuous throughput; competing network use or changing connection conditions can extend the transfer. If the schedule is close, reduce competing uploads and allow more lead time next time.

The video’s bitrate seems higher than your internet speed

Those numbers describe different things. Video encoding bitrate contributes to the file’s size; upload speed controls how fast the complete file moves to YouTube. A file can upload more slowly than its playback duration without making the Premiere a live broadcast.

The Premiere will not accept a 4K output

YouTube’s Premiere workflow does not support output greater than 1080p. Use a supported output rather than treating YouTube’s general 4K upload encoding recommendations as a Premiere allowance.

A separate live stream is unstable

Check the live encoder’s bitrate against YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec and video settings, verify actual outbound capacity, and leave the recommended headroom for primary and backup streams. Test with representative motion and audio before the event, use Ethernet for a computer setup where practical, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
