Plan on about 10.8 decimal GB per day for each 1 Mbps of continuously transmitted bitrate, or about 324 GB per 30-day month per Mbps. Using YouTube’s H.264 recommendation of 10 Mbps for 1080p30, a nonstop stream works out to about 108 GB per day or 3.24 TB per 30 days. These are calculated estimates of the store’s upload to YouTube—not viewers’ combined playback data.
Estimate your stream’s data use
Multiply the encoder’s average bitrate by the hours streamed, then convert bits to bytes. For a stream running 24 hours a day, the quick planning formulas are:
- GB per day (decimal) ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 10.8
- GB per 30 days (decimal) ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324
For example, at 10 Mbps: 10 × 10.8 = 108 GB per day; over 30 days, 108 × 30 = 3,240 GB, or 3.24 TB in decimal units. A data meter that reports binary GiB or TiB will show a somewhat different number.
The calculation is bitrate × seconds ÷ 8, converted to decimal bytes. It assumes the stated bitrate is sustained continuously for 24 hours a day. It is not a measured billable total: audio, transport overhead, bitrate variation, reconnects, and a backup feed can add to actual transfers. The available guidance does not quantify those additions for a particular setup.

Daily and monthly estimates by YouTube H.264 setting
YouTube’s official live encoder guidance lists these recommended H.264 video bitrates. The data figures below are arithmetic estimates derived from those recommendations, not figures published by YouTube. Check YouTube’s current table before configuring a stream because codec-specific recommendations can change.

These are planning amounts for the broadcaster’s outgoing feed. They do not include a separate backup stream or represent total network traffic at the store.

What can change the total?
Configured bitrate and stream quality
Bitrate is the main input in this estimate: double the bitrate and the calculated upload volume doubles. Select the row that matches the encoder’s actual output resolution and frame rate, rather than the resolution of the original promo video alone. YouTube lists separate recommendations for different codecs as well as settings.
Codec and compression
YouTube’s HLS guide says HEVC generally provides 25% to 50% more compression than H.264 at the same video quality. That is general guidance, not a guaranteed reduction for a particular promo loop or encoder. Use the bitrate actually configured for the feed when estimating data use.

Hours online and backup ingest
A 24/7 estimate assumes 24 hours of active ingest every day. Planned or unplanned downtime reduces use. A redundant backup feed can increase outbound traffic; YouTube’s API documentation describes a primary and optional backup ingestion address. If you send a second feed, include it in your network allowance.
Store upload versus viewer playback
The figures here describe the store sending a stream into YouTube. YouTube says it transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Viewer downloads are a separate traffic measure and depend on the audience; do not multiply the store’s upload estimate by the number of viewers.

How to plan for a store connection
- Choose the output settings. Decide what quality suits the store display, then note the encoder’s bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Calculate a baseline. Multiply the bitrate in Mbps by 10.8 for an approximate full day, or by 324 for a 30-day month. Adjust for the actual number of hours the feed will be live.
- Test the real setup. YouTube recommends matching stream quality to a reliable internet connection, testing with audio and movement similar to the event, and monitoring stream health while live. Run the intended settings at the store and compare the calculated estimate with the router or ISP data meter over a representative period.
- Account for shared use and redundancy. A bitrate table cannot establish that a particular connection will remain stable unattended, especially when other store devices share it. Test under representative conditions. If a backup ingest feed is active, allow for its additional outbound traffic.
YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify a universal upload-speed headroom multiplier, so a fixed multiplier should not be assumed. The local test and data meter are the best way to estimate a particular installation’s actual usage.
