What record did Moana 2 break?
Walt Disney Animation Studios released Moana 2 in U.S. theaters on November 27, 2024, during the Thanksgiving holiday period. The animated musical sequel reunites Moana, voiced by Auli‘i Cravalho, and Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson, for another voyage. Disney’s press kit lists November 29 as the film’s theatrical opening date in its description, while the release itself began on November 27. Disney’s 2024 year-end studio recap called the film’s $225 million domestic Thanksgiving weekend the biggest Thanksgiving weekend ever. The claim is specifically about the domestic holiday weekend, not a worldwide total or a comparison of all release-weekend formats. Disney’s 2024 recap states the record claim.
Why are two domestic opening totals reported?
The figures reflect different reporting points. On December 1, 2024, the Associated Press reported that Moana 2 earned $221 million domestically from Wednesday through Sunday, a five-day total based on studio estimates. Disney’s later year-end recap gave the domestic Thanksgiving weekend figure as $225 million. Both should be identified by source and timing rather than treated as interchangeable measurements.

The AP’s contemporaneous report also put the film’s worldwide total through opening Sunday at $386 million. Disney’s early opening-period announcement reported $389 million worldwide. Those worldwide figures likewise come from separate reports, and neither should be compared directly with the domestic Thanksgiving record. The Associated Press report and Disney’s opening-period announcement give their respective totals.

What the billion-dollar milestone means
Disney later announced that Moana 2 had surpassed $1 billion worldwide. In the same 2025 announcement, the studio described it as the third-highest-grossing Walt Disney Animation Studios release at that time. That is a later cumulative result and a studio-specific ranking, separate from the Thanksgiving opening record.

Home release
For viewers who missed the theatrical run, Disney announced a digital purchase release and a Blu-ray home release, with Blu-ray specified for March 18. Disney’s home-release announcement gives those details.
