Nine million tulips helped make Munchkinland in Wicked feel like a real, colorful place rather than a purely digital fantasy. The production grew the flowers in Norfolk, planned their layout around the cinematography, and combined the physical fields with visual-effects extensions and adjustments.
Why Munchkinland was planted with tulips
Production designer Nathan Crowley said director Jon M. Chu wanted Munchkinland to feel practical, whimsical and joyous—and wanted its residents to farm something. Crowley chose tulips as the landscape’s defining crop. As he put it, “I’m going to plant millions of tulips and give you all the colors of the rainbow.”

The palette ranged from blue and white through red and orange. Crowley limited green so the flowers would not compete visually with Elphaba. The planting therefore served more than a decorative purpose: it helped establish the Munchkins’ relationship to their land and gave the setting a distinctive color identity.
How the planting was coordinated with filming
Crowley said the production grew nine million tulips with Norfolk farmer Mark Eves. The American Society of Cinematographers also reported nine million tulips planted in Norfolk for the Munchkinland expanses. That figure describes the production’s reported planting; the cited accounts do not establish an independently audited count or mean every flower visible in every shot was physically present.

The field had to work for the camera as well as for the design. According to the American Society of Cinematographers’ account of cinematographer Alice Brooks’ planning, her team asked the farmer to rotate the planting orientation by about 30 degrees to align the rows with the sun and intended shots. Discussions with the farmer began in August 2022, and the tulips bloomed in April 2023.
What was real and what visual effects added
The finished Munchkinland landscape combines practical flowers with digital work. ILM visual-effects supervisor Pablo Helman said the tulips were planted about 100 miles from the set: “Yes, there were nine million tulips planted, but they were planted a hundred miles from the set.”

In the opening image of children running toward Munchkinland, Helman explained, the practical field surrounds the children while visual effects complete the landscape beyond it. The filmmakers also adjusted lighting and the sun in post-production. The film’s reported total of 2,200 visual-effects shots is a whole-film figure, not a count of shots involving tulips.
This mix reflects Brooks’ stated aim: “Even though the movie features visual effects, our intention was to capture as much in camera as possible and make a film that feels handmade.” Practical flowers provided a physical setting for performers and camera; digital extensions and adjustments carried the landscape beyond what was planted and refined the final image.

How sunlight shaped the look
Brooks described Glinda’s first appearance as backlit by early-morning sunlight in the tulip fields. The filmmakers used natural cues, with sunrise and sunset patterns helping shape the looks associated with Glinda and Elphaba. The flowers thus contributed both color and a real outdoor environment in which light could help define the characters’ visual worlds.

Universal said the tulips and greenery from the film’s landscapes were resold to the local community after production. The company did not specify how many plants were resold, who bought them, or the terms of the resale.
