Miami Film Festival has opened applications for its 2027 Louies documentary fund, which will award $100,000 across six grants to Miami-based filmmakers. Three grants are for short documentaries; the other three support a feature documentary or a feature in post-production. Applications are open September 28 through November 6, 2026.
What The Louies fund offers
The Louies is Miami Film Festival’s annual documentary program, presented by Miami Dade College. Its third-year cycle is supported by the founding Lynn & Louis Wolfson II Family Foundation and, this year, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Executive director James Woolley said the program aims to champion Miami documentary filmmakers and help local stories reach the big screen.
The six awards differ by project format and stage:
| Grant | Number and amount | Project requirements | Experience requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feature documentary | One grant of $50,000 | A film of at least 50 minutes | Applicant must have completed a short documentary |
| Short documentary | Three grants of $10,000 each | An eight-to-12-minute film | First-time directors may apply, but must have film experience and credited work |
| Feature finishing fund | Two grants of $10,000 each | A feature-length documentary in post-production | Not stated in the current announcement; check the official application |
The three short-film grants are one part of the six-recipient, $100,000 program—not the entire fund.
Who is eligible
Miami Dade College says applicants must be at least 18, permanent residents of Miami-Dade County, and U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The feature grant has a prior-work condition: applicants must have completed a short documentary. Short-grant applicants can be first-time directors, but need film experience and credited work. The current application should be consulted for the full terms and category-specific conditions.

The archive, housed at MDC’s Wolfson Campus, documents Florida history.
