Maria Shrime Gonzalez was eliminated in fifth place in the Survivor 46 finale after Kenzie Petty and Liz Wilcox worked together to beat her in the final-five immunity challenge. She later described feeling angry and unfairly treated by the result, but also proud that two competitors joined forces to take her out. Her separate decision to vote for Kenzie over close ally Charlie at Final Tribal Council came from what Maria said she saw in Kenzie’s fire-making and her plans for the prize money.
How Maria was eliminated in the finale
CBS lists the May 22, 2024 finale as episode 13, “Friends Going to War,” and describes a penultimate immunity challenge among the remaining five contestants. TVLine reported that Kenzie Petty and Liz Wilcox worked together to beat Maria. Without immunity, Maria was voted out in fifth place.

Maria told TVLine the outcome left her angry and feeling that the challenge was unfair. She also found a point of pride in how it happened: “It’s an honor to be blindsided, like people get blindsided.” She said she was proud that two competitors had worked together to eliminate her. Those are Maria’s reflections after the game, distinct from the on-screen sequence of the challenge and vote.
The late-game decisions Maria reflected on
Her alliance with Charlie and turn toward Q
In a post-finale interview with Parade, Maria recounted her alliance with Charlie and her later partnership with Q. She said she planned to target Charlie in favor of Q, but that plan failed and she was left out of the vote. That left her to face the final-five challenge without the position she had hoped to secure.

The reward choice involving Q and Liz
Maria told TVLine that choosing Q rather than Liz for a reward may have looked bad to the other players and revealed how closely she and Q were working. In her retrospective account, she felt pulled between rewarding Q’s loyalty and choosing Liz; she said her head favored Q, her heart favored Liz, and she froze. She did not identify this choice as the sole cause of her elimination.
Why Maria voted for Kenzie over Charlie
Maria’s jury vote happened after her elimination; it was a separate decision from the final-five challenge and vote. She told TVLine that watching Kenzie make fire at final four shaped her choice: Kenzie struggled, experienced frustration and doubt, and then succeeded. Maria connected that persistence to her own experience of doubting herself and pushing through.
“This is not a story about why I didn’t vote for Charlie. This is a story about why I voted for Kenzie, why I chose Kenzie, and for me, yeah, that started at the Final Four fire-making when I watched Kenzie make fire, when I watched her having so much frustration and failure and doubt, and then come out on top and see what she was capable of.”
Maria also told TVLine that Kenzie’s answer about using the money to start a family resonated with her. She related it to her own history of putting dreams aside while raising a family. This is Maria’s stated explanation for her vote, not a claim about every juror’s reasoning.

What the blindside and jury vote mean in context
Maria’s elimination was the result of the final-five challenge followed by the vote; her later vote for Kenzie reflected what she said she valued at Final Tribal Council. Parade characterized Maria’s move against Tiffany at final eight as a strategic high point, but that is the outlet’s assessment of her gameplay. Maria’s own interviews offer her retrospective view of the choices and feelings surrounding her exit and jury decision.
CBS’s Survivor Season 46 episode listing identifies “Friends Going to War” as episode 13 and gives its air date as May 22, 2024. Maria discussed her elimination and jury vote with TVLine and her late-game strategy with Parade in interviews published May 23, 2024.
