John Amos’s marriage count is disputed in published accounts: the Associated Press obituary names two wives, while The Washington Post obituary and Encyclopedia.com name three. The sources agree that Noel Mickelson was his first reported wife and that his two children were from that marriage; they do not establish why any of the marriages ended.
How many times was John Amos married?
There is no uncontested total in the sources cited here. The Associated Press obituary identifies Noel Mickelson and actress Lillian Lehman as Amos’s wives. The Washington Post obituary and Encyclopedia.com also list Elisabete de Sousa, giving a total of three reported marriages. Because the AP account omits de Sousa, it is more accurate to describe the record as conflicting than to present either two or three as settled beyond dispute.

Who was Noel Mickelson?
Mickelson was Amos’s first reported wife. The AP says they met in college. Their children were Shannon Amos and Kelly Christopher Amos; the Washington Post likewise says both children were from his first marriage.
What is reported about Lillian Lehman?
The AP identifies Lehman as an actress and another of Amos’s wives, and reports that the marriage ended in divorce. It does not give a reason for the divorce or further personal details about their relationship.

Why does Elisabete de Sousa appear in some accounts?
The Washington Post obituary and Encyclopedia.com include de Sousa among Amos’s wives, while the AP obituary does not. That difference is the central reason accounts give different marriage totals. The AP’s omission does not, by itself, establish that the marriage did not occur.
IMDb lists date ranges for Mickelson, Lehman and de Sousa, but its biography text is user-contributed and those dates are not independently corroborated by the stronger sources cited above. They should not be treated as verified marriage or divorce dates.

What is known about the divorces?
The Washington Post reports that the three marriages it names ended in divorce, and the AP reports a divorce from Lehman. The cited accounts do not establish why any marriage ended, so claims about motives or conflict would go beyond what they report.

In the AP obituary, his son Kelly Christopher Amos said: “He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.” The AP reported that Amos died on August 21, 2024, at age 84.
