Why an exhaustive list is hard to establish
The Smithsonian’s Side Door page about “May the 4th Be With You” includes an archival Star Wars clip using the words, offering cultural context rather than a complete film transcript. A fan-maintained Wookieepedia overview discusses the phrase and its history, but is not an authoritative source for an exhaustive count.

But its results also include unrelated films and television, and search snippets do not establish that every relevant occurrence has been found. A defensible complete inventory would need to check each film directly or rely on an authoritative, comprehensive transcript set. It would also need consistent rules for variants, offscreen dialogue, interrupted phrases, and other borderline cases. Without that verification, assigning every use to a film and speaker would risk turning a partial record into a false claim of completeness.
