Across their five major 2008 singles event matches, Edge and The Undertaker went from a WrestleMania title showdown to a Hell in a Cell finale. Ranked by stakes, match structure, memorable moments and how distinctly each bout stands apart, the series’ best overall spectacle is their SummerSlam clash; the least satisfying payoff is the Judgment Day count-out.
How this ranking is scoped
This list covers the five major 2008 singles event matches: WrestleMania XXIV, Backlash, Judgment Day, One Night Stand and SummerSlam. It is an editorial ranking, not an official WWE order. The feud’s earlier context includes Edge cashing in Money in the Bank on an already fatigued Undertaker in May 2007, but that was not a direct match between them and is outside this ranking. WWE’s SummerSlam diary recounts that moment.
5. Judgment Day 2008: a count-out leaves the title vacant
The least satisfying match payoff in this series comes at Judgment Day. Undertaker beat Edge by count-out after the two fought into the stands, but the vacant World Heavyweight Championship could change hands only by pinfall or submission. Undertaker returned to the ring before the referee’s count; Vickie Guerrero then clarified that the count-out had not awarded him the title. The struggle continued, but the championship question did not get an in-ring resolution. WWE’s event report documents the result and title stipulation.
4. Backlash 2008: Undertaker survives the rematch
Backlash gives the WrestleMania rematch a clear championship outcome: Edge tries to reclaim the World Heavyweight Championship, and Undertaker retains. The build included Vickie Guerrero placing obstacles in Undertaker’s path, including Kane, Festus and Batista. That context gives the rematch added story stakes, while its straightforward title result makes it more conclusive than Judgment Day. It ranks below the later entries because they deliver either a more consequential change or more distinctive spectacle. WWE’s Backlash report covers the build and match.

3. WrestleMania XXIV: Undertaker wins the World Heavyweight Championship
The series’ foundational 2008 match has the clearest championship consequence: Undertaker defeats Edge to win the World Heavyweight Championship. The result also extends Undertaker’s WrestleMania record to 16–0, as WWE recorded at the time. That figure describes his record after the win, not the match’s quality. WrestleMania ranks above Backlash for the scale of the title change, though the later stipulation matches offer more visually distinctive set pieces. WWE’s WrestleMania XXIV coverage records the result and streak figure.
2. One Night Stand 2008: Edge wins the TLC match and championship
At One Night Stand, the vacant World Heavyweight Championship is on the line, as is Undertaker’s WWE status. The result is a major reversal: Edge wins the TLC match and the title after Undertaker had taken the first two event matches in this ranking. WWE’s retrospective identifies it as Undertaker’s TLC debut and Edge’s sixth TLC match. It also highlights Undertaker chokeslamming Edge off the ring apron through a ladder in a weapon-heavy contest. WWE’s retrospective details the stipulation and sequence.

1. SummerSlam 2008: Hell in a Cell delivers the strongest spectacle
The series reaches its most forceful conclusion inside Hell in a Cell. WWE recounts Edge using the Cell and weapons, including a spear through announce tables, before Undertaker answers with major chokeslams and wins by pinfall. After the match, Undertaker chokeslams Edge from a ladder through the ring. The stipulation, set pieces and decisive finish make this the series’ strongest overall spectacle. WWE also selected the bout among its best Hell in a Cell matches, citing its highlight-reel crashes. WWE’s match retrospective and Hell in a Cell feature cover the match and its place among the event’s standout bouts.
