Spotify Premium lets you download up to 10,000 tracks on each of as many as five devices. That is a theoretical maximum of 50,000 device-level downloads, not one shared vault containing 50,000 unique songs. Spotify Free accounts can download podcasts, but music requires Premium. Offline downloads remain available only while the account connects to Spotify at least once every 30 days.

These limits and requirements come from Spotify’s offline-listening guidance and Premium benefits page. Interface labels can differ by country, operating system and app version; the instructions below reflect Spotify’s support pages checked in August 2026.
Is the limit 10,000 songs total or 10,000 per device?
Spotify describes the allowance as 10,000 tracks on each of up to five devices. A phone, tablet, laptop and other authorized devices therefore have separate local download capacity, subject to the five-device ceiling.
The often-quoted 50,000 figure is only the arithmetic result of five devices multiplied by 10,000 tracks. It represents copies stored locally on those devices, not 50,000 different tracks in a single account library. Downloading the same playlist to a phone and tablet creates offline copies in both places; it does not increase the amount of unique music in your Spotify catalog.

Spotify’s wording uses both “tracks” and “songs.” Albums and playlists are the containers you select, while the stated limit is expressed in tracks. A 100-track playlist will generally use roughly 100 track positions, although unavailable items and duplicate handling can affect what actually downloads. Spotify does not publish a separate, confirmed 10,000-item podcast quota on the cited support page.
Who can download music?
Premium subscribers
Premium plans support downloading albums, playlists and podcasts for offline listening. Spotify lists offline downloads as a benefit of Premium Individual; plan availability and terms can vary by country.
Spotify Free
Free accounts may download podcasts, but Spotify does not provide music downloads for offline listening on Free. Saving a song to Your Library, liking it or adding it to a playlist is not the same as downloading it.
How to download music on a phone or tablet
- Connect to the internet, preferably Wi-Fi.
- Open the album or playlist you want to keep offline.
- Tap Download.
- Wait for the download indicator to show that the content is available offline.
Spotify uses Wi-Fi for downloads by default. To allow cellular downloads, open Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Downloads and streaming → Downloads over cellular. Mobile downloads can use substantial data, especially with higher audio-quality settings, so check your plan before enabling this option.

Downloading one song
Spotify generally does not offer a separate “download this song” control. Add the track to a playlist, download that playlist, and remove any other tracks if you want the smallest possible offline set. Spotify documents this playlist method in its listen-offline instructions.

How to download music on a computer
- Open Spotify while connected to the internet.
- Open the playlist or album.
- Click Download.
- Wait for the downloaded indicator to appear.
Desktop menu names can vary between Windows, macOS and app versions. To save a single track, put it in a playlist first and download that playlist.
How to make Spotify play only downloaded content
Downloads normally play when your connection drops, but Offline mode prevents Spotify from trying to stream items that are not stored locally.
- Mobile and tablet: Open Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Offline mode.
- Mac: Open the Spotify menu in the Apple menu bar and choose Offline Mode.
- Windows: Open the three-dot menu, choose File, then Offline Mode.
In Offline mode, content that was not downloaded appears unavailable or grayed out.
How long do Spotify downloads last?
You must connect the account to Spotify online at least once every 30 days to keep downloaded content available. Spotify says this check also allows play data to be collected for artist compensation. Offline downloads are therefore a subscription-linked playback feature, not permanent ownership of audio files.
Offline access can also be affected if the Premium entitlement ends, the account changes, or a track becomes unavailable in your market. Spotify’s cited support page establishes the Premium requirement and 30-day check but does not enumerate every cancellation or licensing scenario.

What happens when you use more than five devices?
The five-device rule concerns devices holding downloads, not every device on which you sign in. If downloads are made on more than five devices, Spotify may remove downloads from the device used least recently. Before a long trip, decide which five devices actually need offline music and avoid downloading a large library to a temporary device.
Why Spotify downloads disappear or will not start
Downloads vanished
- Connect online and check whether more than 30 days have passed since the last connection.
- Confirm that Spotify was not recently reinstalled; reinstalling removes local downloads.
- Check whether downloads were created on more than five devices and an older device was evicted.
- Update Spotify and restart the app.
- Check free storage and, if applicable, whether an SD card is functioning correctly.
- Verify that the album or track is still available to your account and region.
These checks reflect Spotify’s troubleshooting guidance at support.spotify.com. Reinstallation should be a later step when possible: it requires downloading all music and podcasts again, which is inconvenient on a slow or metered connection.

The Download button is missing
- The account may be Spotify Free rather than Premium.
- The item may not be downloadable for the account or region.
- The app may be out of date.
- The five-download-device limit may have been reached.
- The content may already be unavailable.
Also check connectivity, available storage, battery-saving or cache-clearing utilities, then restart and update the app before reinstalling.

There is no responsible single gigabyte estimate. Storage depends on track length, Spotify’s selected audio quality, the device operating system, and whether you download podcasts or video podcasts. A 10,000-track allowance is a service limit, not a promise that every device has enough physical space to use it.
Check the device’s free storage before starting a large download. Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free memory when troubleshooting downloads. Downloading in stages lets you identify storage pressure before committing an entire library.

How to remove downloads and reclaim space
Remove every download on mobile
- Tap your profile picture.
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Choose Data-saving and offline.
- Under Storage, select Remove all downloads.
Remove one playlist or album
- Open Your Library.
- On mobile, select Downloaded if that filter is available.
- Open the downloaded album or playlist.
- Tap the green downloaded-arrow button.
- On mobile, tap Remove.
Are Spotify downloads files you own?
No. Spotify’s download feature stores protected offline playback data for use inside the Spotify app. It does not provide ordinary MP3, FLAC or other user-accessible files, and the cited support pages do not describe an export function. Treat services that promise to convert Spotify tracks into files as a separate, potentially unsafe category rather than as an official Spotify feature; they can create copyright, account-security, malware and terms-of-service risks.

Is Premium worthwhile for offline listening?
Premium is most useful if you regularly travel, commute through unreliable coverage, need music on flights, or want to avoid streaming mobile data. The 10,000-track per-device allowance is generous for most personal libraries, but it does not remove the five-device limit, the 30-day online check or storage constraints.
Premium is less compelling if you nearly always have Wi-Fi, rarely listen offline, or only need occasional podcast downloads. Anyone planning offline playback on six or more devices must choose which five will retain downloads.
