YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. That limit concerns whether YouTube captures the broadcast—not how long a completed replay remains available.
How long can YouTube capture a continuous podcast livestream?
YouTube Help says livestreams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. Its guidance applies to encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. For a broadcast that runs longer than 12 hours, YouTube warns that it may not be captured at all. YouTube’s archive guidance and its encoder instructions both describe the under-12-hour archive behavior.
If you need a replay, plan to end the broadcast before it reaches 12 hours. Do not schedule it to end exactly at the boundary: the guidance says “under 12 hours,” and warns about streams that exceed 12 hours; it does not guarantee capture at precisely 12 hours.
Does the 12-hour limit mean the replay expires?
No. The 12-hour threshold is about the length of a single live broadcast YouTube may capture. It is not a stated retention period for a completed archive. The archive guidance explains that creators can change an archive’s visibility or delete it, but gives no fixed duration for how long a completed replay remains available. So there is no basis in that guidance to promise that every archive stays available forever—or that it expires after a particular number of days.

How to protect a long podcast archive
Keep each broadcast below the threshold
For a show that must run longer than 12 hours, one practical approach is to end the broadcast and start a separate one before the threshold. This follows YouTube’s stated single-stream limit, but YouTube does not guarantee that a particular restart workflow will work without interruption. Check that each completed broadcast appears in the channel’s Live tab before relying on its replay.
Make a local recording
YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. A separate recording gives you another copy if YouTube does not capture the stream or if you need to restore the episode later. Make sure the recording is actually running and that the destination has enough free storage for the full program.

Check visibility if the replay is missing for viewers
If an archive exists but viewers cannot see it, check its visibility in YouTube Studio. Creators can change the archive’s privacy setting there. A visibility issue is different from YouTube failing to capture the stream in the first place.
Do not confuse archive capture with live DVR
DVR controls whether viewers can pause or rewind while a livestream is in progress; it does not determine how long a finished replay is retained. YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube’s DVR guidance describes that live-viewing limitation separately from archive capture.
