Since then, her condition has become a visible part of her public story: she has appeared at fashion events with diabetes technology on display, spoken about representation, and taken part in a Barbie collaboration. Her runway and campaign record is well documented, but the available reporting does not show that her diagnosis caused particular career gains or setbacks.
What Lila Moss has said about her diagnosis
British Vogue reports that Moss was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 12. She has described raising awareness as important to her, and has spoken about the meaning of seeing other people with T1D recognize themselves in her public appearances.
In a July 2025 interview with British Vogue, Moss said: “Raising awareness for T1D has always been really important to me, but I think creating this Barbie has also been a sort of healing experience for that little girl.” She also said, “We don’t need to hide our differences.” These are her reflections on visibility and representation, not a measure of how public awareness or health outcomes have changed.
How diabetes technology became visible in her fashion work
Moss has appeared in major fashion settings with diabetes devices visible rather than concealed. British Vogue identifies her Omnipod at the 2021 Fendace show and a FreeStyle Libre patch at the 2022 Met Gala. At Chloé’s Fall 2023 show, she said she was happy to close the show while showing her insulin pod on the runway, as recorded in Vogue’s model diary.

Those appearances gave her a platform to discuss living with T1D in a fashion context. British Vogue reports that she received messages from people who felt that seeing her devices helped them or their children feel more represented. Moss described those responses as meaningful; the reporting does not quantify their reach or establish a broader population-level effect.
What changed in her career—and what is not established
Moss’s career has included a Miu Miu Spring/Summer 2021 catwalk debut, the DKNY Spring/Summer 2025 campaign, and subsequent runway and editorial work. Vogue Italia identified her as the face of that DKNY campaign.

Her diagnosis is part of her public identity and advocacy, but the cited coverage does not connect it causally to her bookings, income, career opportunities, or setbacks. Nor does it provide a before-and-after account of her private routines, health, or relationships. The clearest documented career-related change is therefore one of public visibility: she has discussed T1D and shown her devices in fashion settings while continuing to work as a model.

In July 2025, Mattel announced two distinct dolls connected to T1D. One was a one-of-a-kind doll in Moss’s likeness. The other was a retail Barbie Fashionistas doll representing type 1 diabetes, developed with Breakthrough T1D; it was not a retail Moss likeness.

| Bespoke Lila Moss doll | A one-of-a-kind doll in Moss’s likeness. In a May 2026 interview, she said she helped choose its outfit and the placement of its arm sensor. | Mattel announced it as a bespoke doll; the cited coverage does not describe it as a retail product. |
| Barbie Fashionistas doll with T1D | A retail representation doll developed with Breakthrough T1D. Mattel described it with a continuous glucose monitor, phone displaying a CGM app, insulin pump, and purse. | Mattel said on July 8, 2025, it was available through Mattel Shop and retailers nationwide. That announcement does not establish current stock. |
In its July 8, 2025 announcement, Mattel said it donated £20,000 in Moss’s name to support Breakthrough T1D. The same announcement described the charity’s 2025 Children’s Congress as bringing 170 children with T1D, ages 4–17, to Washington, DC. Those figures provide context for the collaboration; they do not measure the dolls’ effect on awareness or health.
Moss said she hoped the Barbie would help people understand that “even with T1D, you can still do everything you want to do.” In a May 2026 interview with Who What Wear, she said, “Also, advocating for type 1 diabetes awareness and access to medical technology is important to me.” Her participation reflects that stated interest, but no cited study establishes a measurable effect from her visibility or the Barbie launch.
