Lena Headey performed Cersei Lannister’s facial and emotional acting in a beige shift, while Rebecca Van Cleave performed the nude walk. The show’s visual-effects team merged the two performances for the finished scene. Headey later said she chose that arrangement because being nude for the three-day shoot could have affected the emotional state she wanted to bring to Cersei.
Which scene was it?
The walk takes place in the Season 5 finale of Game of Thrones. After confessing, Cersei is shorn and made to walk through King’s Landing as a crowd jeers and throws objects at her. Contemporary reports describe the sequence as a three-day shoot in Dubrovnik, Croatia, in October 2014. ABC News and TechTimes reported those production details in 2015.
Who performed the walk, and what did Headey do?
Rebecca Van Cleave performed the nude physical walk. Headey acted as Cersei in a beige shift, contributing the character’s face and emotional performance. The visual-effects team merged the performances in the finished scene, according to contemporary reporting. The accounts establish the broad approach, but do not specify the shot-by-shot division or technical methods used.
Van Cleave said Headey walked beside her during filming and helped guide her into Cersei’s mindset and movements. In interviews reported by TIME and The Independent, Van Cleave called the experience “one of the scariest, most wonderful, most gratifying experiences I could have imagined.” She also defended the use of a double: “I personally don’t agree with anybody who says having a body double detracts from the scene.”

Why didn’t Headey perform the nude walk herself?
Headey’s explanation was about the performance she wanted to give, not a general objection to nudity. She said she had done nude scenes before, but thought being nude through three days of filming could leave her angry. That, she felt, would not fit Cersei’s emotional state in the scene. As Headey put it, “I didn’t want to be angry. I don’t think Cersei would be angry.” The Independent and TIME reported her explanation.
Headey also spoke about being a mother and the pressure of being recognizable in public. In her account, the decision was tied to the conditions of this particular shoot and to preserving the performance she believed Cersei needed.

What the production accounts do—and don’t—establish
- Established in contemporary reporting: Van Cleave performed the nude walk, Headey acted in a beige shift, and visual effects combined their performances.
- Not established by those accounts: a specific compositing or face-replacement method, software, camera setup, number of takes, or an exact division of shots between the performers.
The Daily Beast’s July 21, 2026 recap of Headey’s interview with The Telegraph attributes to her a remark about being with “3000 extras.” That is a reported figure from a later interview, not an independently verified production count, so it should not be treated as an established statistic.
