K-pop fan communities can bring the coordination skills they use to promote artists into political life: organizing online, making hashtags trend, sharing information and raising money. Documented cases include a Chilean campaign for Gabriel Boric and U.S. activity around the 2020 election period. Other prominent examples, in Thailand and Indonesia, concern protest or civic activism rather than election campaigning. These cases show how fans can make issues visible and mobilize people; they do not establish that fan activity changed election results.
What fandom adds to political organizing
Fans already know how to coordinate across online networks: they circulate posts, rally attention around hashtags and share practical information with peers. Those habits can be redirected toward political causes, from voter outreach to protest support. The tools are familiar; the political purpose depends on the country, the issue and the people taking part. A useful distinction is between making a message visible, mobilizing participants, changing voter behavior and affecting an election result. The documented examples are strongest on visibility and mobilization, not on proving the latter effects.
Chile: a direct election campaign for Boric
The clearest election-specific example in the available reporting is “Kpopers for Boric,” organized by Constanza Jorquera, an associate researcher at the Chilean Korean Study Center at the University of Santiago. The campaign supported Gabriel Boric through digital campaigns, community-building events and voter information drives. These activities illustrate how a fan network can be adapted for electoral outreach, but the account does not establish an effect on turnout, vote choice or the election result. The description comes from a secondary summary of Soo Youn’s February 16, 2023 MIT Technology Review article; the publication also promoted the article with a quote attributed to Jorquera about using fandom’s ability to make artists popular for political causes.
United States: online action around the 2020 election period
During 2020, K-pop fans supported Black Lives Matter, flooded hostile or racist hashtags with fan content, and joined online actions intended to draw attention to political issues. K-pop fans and TikTok users also reserved tickets for Donald Trump’s Tulsa rally without intending to attend. That action disrupted expectations around attendance, but it should not be credited to K-pop fans alone, nor treated as evidence that it determined the election. Reporting documents tactics and attention, not a measured change in votes.

Participation did not mean that all fans shared one political identity. TIME quotes fan Sahia S. saying, “I really don’t believe that being a K-pop fan is something that inherently makes you a social activist.” The Guardian also reported that some South Korean fans were uncomfortable with artists being pulled into Trump-related news. Fandom is a network of people with varied views, not a unified political bloc.
Thailand: substantial political participation, but not election campaigning
In 2020, Thai K-pop communities supported youth-led pro-democracy protests. Fans circulated information and hashtags, including #WhatsHappeningInThailand, organized fundraising, helped arrange protective equipment and deliveries to protest sites, and supported legal assistance through groups including Thai Lawyers for Human Rights. These are forms of civic and protest mobilization, not evidence of electoral campaigning.

Reuters reported that Thai SONE fan organizers raised more than 780,000 baht (about $25,000) in nine hours, while Thai K-pop fandoms collectively raised more than 4 million baht (about $128,000) that week for the October 2020 protests. A 2024 study in the International Journal of Communication describes online communication, donation links and boycott activity in the protest context. It attributes the figure of 6.1 million tweets for #Sept19ReturnPowerToPeopleMob to getdaytrends in 2021, referring to the trend around a September 19, 2020 protest. These figures document particular reported campaigns and should not be read as measures of election donations or the activity of all Thai fans.
Indonesia: activism and an election-related case on X
A 2024 academic article describes K-pop fan participation in Indonesian activism against the Omnibus Law, including online and offline action around #TolakOmnibusLaw. Separately, a Bawaslu Journal of Election Justice search-result abstract describes a qualitative case study of “Anies Bubble,” a K-pop-related political activism case on X during Indonesia’s 2024 presidential election. The abstract says the study examines anonymity in fandom culture; it does not establish an effect on votes or the election outcome. These examples show political activity linked to fandom, but they should not be generalized into claims about a national “K-pop vote.”

What the cases do—and do not—show
Documented examples include election outreach, online amplification, fundraising and protest support. They also differ in setting and participants: a named Chilean campaign is not the same as a U.S. coalition action involving fans and TikTok users, or Thai protest fundraising. Comparing them responsibly means keeping the type of political activity and the evidence of its effects clear.
- Visibility: Hashtags and coordinated posting can draw attention to an issue.
- Mobilization: Networks can share voter information, coordinate attendance or collect donations.
- Electoral effects: The cited accounts do not provide robust causal evidence that these actions changed turnout, vote choice or results.
- Representation: Actions belong to the documented organizers and participants, not to every K-pop fan or fandom.
The evidence consists of specific case studies and reporting, not a comprehensive global census. It supports a narrower conclusion: fandom can supply useful organizing habits, while the aims and risks of participation are local and the electoral impact remains unmeasured in these cases.
