Spoilers for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Two and Part Three. Part Two ends on two linked crises: Psycho-Pirate turns Supergirl against the Monitor, and the Anti-Monitor prepares an attack that threatens the surviving worlds. Part Three picks up that danger directly, with the Anti-Monitor assaulting the surviving Earths in a pocket universe.
Why Supergirl turns against the Monitor
The film makes Supergirl’s betrayal personal. After Krypton is destroyed, the Monitor rescues her and takes on a foster-parent role, creating a bond that makes her later attack more than a tactical reversal. The film’s opening setup and the relationship are described in Nerdly’s Part Two review.
Psycho-Pirate exploits Supergirl’s grief and distrust. He persuades her that the Monitor caused Krypton’s destruction and other erasures, then presents killing him as a way to remake the universe. Supergirl attacks and kills the Monitor. That is Part Two’s immediate character cliffhanger, as recounted in Its Prime Media’s ending explanation.
How the cliffhanger leads into Part Three
The Anti-Monitor’s emergence makes Supergirl’s betrayal part of a larger emergency. As Part Two ends, the Anti-Monitor prepares an antimatter attack, leaving the heroes and the multiverse’s survival unresolved. The loss of the Monitor and Supergirl’s turn create an emotional rupture; the coming assault supplies the final installment’s existential stakes.

DC’s official Part Three synopsis confirms the direct handoff: the Anti-Monitor attacks the surviving Earths in a pocket universe, and heroes from the past join the Justice League and its allies for a last stand. The cliffhanger therefore sets up both a threat to confront and a fractured group of heroes entering the final battle.
What the trilogy is adapting—and what it changes
The animated trilogy draws on the broad framework of Marv Wolfman and George Pérez’s Crisis on Infinite Earths limited series, but it is not a one-to-one retelling. It adapts that multiverse-spanning premise within the Tomorrowverse, using its own characters and continuity. DC’s Part Two movie page and Part Three retrospective describe the films as building on mythology from earlier animated releases.

The finale also serves as the end of the Tomorrowverse arc. DC identifies connections to Justice League: Warworld, Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, Green Lantern: Beware My Power, and the Kamandi and Losers shorts in Constantine: The House of Mystery. The trilogy’s role is thus twofold: adapt a landmark comic event and bring this animated continuity to its conclusion.
Was Crisis planned from the start?
Producer Jim Krieg said the films were planned with Crisis as their destination: “It was from day one.” He explained that the project was conceived as a path toward Crisis, with earlier films building toward it. Executive producer Butch Lukic also pointed to Psycho-Pirate’s earlier appearance as part of that groundwork. These production comments support the idea of deliberate setup, but they do not make every earlier film essential viewing. The remarks appear in DC’s Crisis Counseling interview.

Does the finale permanently erase other animated worlds?
Part Three includes a montage that appears to show familiar animated worlds being destroyed. DC later addressed that reading in an official Q&A. Screenwriter Jim Krieg clarified: “To be clear, no universes were harmed in the making of these motion pictures. Like every supposedly dead superhero, any or all of them are available for a miraculous return.” DC described the montage as a loving revisit, not confirmation that those legacy continuities were permanently erased.
