It connected a familiar hands-on animation craft to a new digital workflow; it did not automatically make the dinosaurs lifelike or replace the work of CG artists.
What was the Dinosaur Input Device?
The DID was a physical input system built around a dinosaur-shaped armature. An animator posed and moved that armature, and the device captured the movement as input for a computer-generated character. In effect, it gave animators trained in stop-motion a way to contribute their sense of weight, timing, and performance to digital animation.
A technical paper describes it as a “stop-motion-capture device” developed to help experienced stop-motion animators animate computer-graphics characters. Tippett Studio likewise describes animators creating digital dinosaur performances by manipulating physical armatures. The available accounts do not establish details such as sensor count, sampling rate, software, or the exact steps used to translate the captured movement into a finished performance.
Why did Jurassic Park need it?
The production initially leaned toward go-motion, a form of stop-motion puppet animation developed at ILM by Phil Tippett. That direction drew on a deep pool of stop-motion expertise, but the production’s path changed after ILM visual-effects supervisor Dennis Muren showed tests of photorealistic digital dinosaurs made by artists in the company’s computer-graphics research and development group.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
As digital creatures became central to the approach, the DID offered a role for Tippett and other stop-motion animators: they could apply their performance skills to CG characters through a physical tool. It was a bridge between ways of working, not a claim that finished stop-motion footage was simply converted into digital animation.
Who developed the DID?
The device came out of collaboration between ILM and Tippett Studio. ILM credits Phil Tippett, Randal Dutra, Tom St. Amand, and the Tippett Studio team with the collaboration. Tippett Studio credits Craig Hayes with leading the efforts that resulted in the device. These accounts describe complementary parts of a shared development effort, rather than a single inventor working alone.

What does the DID’s legacy mean?
The DID is one example of how a production can carry established craft knowledge into a new technology. Jurassic Park is often recognized as a bridge between stop-motion photography and CG animation in motion pictures; the Academy’s history records the film’s 1993 Visual Effects Oscar win. That larger transition should not be attributed to the DID alone: the sources do not establish that it was used for every CG dinosaur shot or that it caused the industry’s move to computer animation by itself.
For general production history, Don Shay’s The Making of Jurassic Park is a relevant book to look for. Its specific coverage of the DID and current edition availability are not established here.
