Jennifer Tilly has said her divorce settlement gave her a share of The Simpsons, and that the resulting income continued after her former husband, co-creator Sam Simon, died in 2015. Reports about court documents describe a later arrangement for administering payments; the underlying agreements have not been independently reviewed here, so the precise formula and legal mechanics remain unconfirmed.
What Tilly has said about the settlement
Tilly and Simon were married from 1984 to 1991, according to Bravo’s 2024 account. On The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, she explained that the divorce settlement gave her “a piece of The Simpsons,” adding that neither of them expected the show to continue for “trillions of years.”
Bravo also reported Tilly’s comments from a November 2021 appearance on Los Angeles Magazine’s “The Originals” podcast. She characterized her share as about one-third of Simon’s ongoing Simpsons earnings. That is Tilly’s public description, not a formula verified against the settlement itself. She said the income meant she no longer had to take as many film roles to cover household expenses, and recalled thinking, “Thank you, Sam.”
Why payments reportedly continued after Simon died
Secondary reports say a 1993 divorce judgment gave Tilly a community-property interest in Fox payments associated with Simon. Those accounts also say that after Simon died in 2015, an arrangement with his estate or trustee addressed how the payments would be administered while preserving the rights and obligations of the divorce judgment.

The distinction matters: the reporting presents Tilly’s income as arising from an interest established through the divorce settlement, with later arrangements addressing payment administration. It does not establish that Simon’s will newly granted her an inheritance or that his death created her share. Without the actual judgment and later agreement, the exact legal classification, payment route, and calculation cannot be confirmed.
What remains unclear
The public accounts support the broad explanation—Tilly says the settlement gave her a share, and later reporting describes an arrangement for payments after Simon’s death—but not the detailed contract terms. The original divorce judgment and post-death agreement are not available in the cited accounts for independent review. Accordingly, “about one-third” should be treated as Tilly’s characterization of her portion, not as a verified clause or a precise calculation of every payment.
