Jared Padalecki said he broke his hand during a season 2 motel fight with vampires on Supernatural. He fell onto his wrist and snapped the scaphoid, a bone in the wrist. Contemporary coverage reported that producers adapted the injury into the show.
How Padalecki says the injury happened
In an interview for Supernatural’s 20th anniversary, Padalecki recalled fighting vampires in a motel during the show’s second season. He said he tried to play off the fall, but landed on his wrist and “snapped my scaphoid in my wrist.” Entertainment Weekly’s anniversary interview is the clearest first-person account of the incident.

Padalecki’s wording about the season is not more precise than “season 2, season 3,” so it does not by itself establish an exact episode. A 2009 Parade interview also confirms that he broke his hand during season two and says he underwent surgery to remove metal pins.
Was it the motel scene in “Bloodlust”?
Secondary episode-history reporting identifies the sequence as the motel attack in “Bloodlust,” episode 2.03. It attributes the account to producer Robert Singer, who said Padalecki had injured his wrist earlier during hiatus and then fell on it again during the vampire fight. That added detail—and the episode identification—comes from a fan-maintained source, not Padalecki’s more general retrospective description. Super-wiki’s “Bloodlust” episode history provides that attribution.

How the show handled the injury
In September 2006, TV Guide reported that Padalecki appeared at a CW launch event with his arm in a sling and said he had broken his wrist during a Supernatural stunt. The report said producers had to work the injury into the show. TV Guide’s contemporary report supports the production adaptation, while the episode-history account says Sam’s arm cast was used to explain the injury in later episodes.
The available accounts support that the production incorporated Padalecki’s real injury into the story; they do not establish that the on-screen action reproduced the exact fall that caused it.
