Aragorn is Isildur’s direct descendant, tracing his ancestry through Isildur’s son Valandil and the northern kings of Arnor and Arthedain. After that kingdom’s line of kings ended, the family continued through the Chieftains of the Dúnedain until Aragorn.
Aragorn’s line runs through Isildur’s son Valandil
Isildur’s eldest sons died with him at the Disaster of the Gladden Fields, but his youngest son, Valandil, survived. Valandil’s descendants became the kings of Arnor and, later, Arthedain. When the northern kingdom’s royal line ended, its heirs carried on as the Chieftains of the Dúnedain. Aragorn belongs to that line.
That ancestry is what makes Aragorn an heir of Isildur: he descends from him by family line, not merely through a political connection. Tolkien’s account is in The Lord of the Rings, Appendix A, particularly “The Northern Line: Heirs of Isildur” and “The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen.”
How many generations separate them?
A secondary reference counts Aragorn as the 39th generation descended from Isildur. Its count comprises 23 generations through the kings of Arnor and Arthedain, followed by 15 generations of Dúnedain chieftains. This is that reference’s generation count, not a new calculation here.

Where to follow the genealogy
For the family line in Tolkien’s own account, consult Appendix A of The Lord of the Rings. “The Northern Line: Heirs of Isildur” follows the northern succession; “The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen” provides further context for Aragorn’s lineage.
