The available accounts support that specific origin for the first name, but they do not establish where “Jones” came from or substantiate the claim that Lucas’s wife named the character.
Was Indiana Jones named after George Lucas’s dog?
Yes, for the name “Indiana.” Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones franchise page says the name was inspired by George Lucas’s dog. That is the clearest direct account in the sources available here.
The claim is narrower than saying the dog supplied the character’s full name. Lucasfilm’s statement explains “Indiana”; it does not explain “Jones.”
Did George Lucas’s wife name Indiana Jones?
The sources reviewed do not substantiate that claim. Lucasfilm credits the inspiration for “Indiana” to Lucas’s dog, while Lucas’s own account of the character’s early development does not credit his wife with naming him. That does not prove the story has never been told elsewhere; it means the wife-origin claim should not be presented as established fact on the strength of these accounts.

When did Lucas first imagine Indiana Jones?
In a 2008 Vanity Fair interview, Lucas said the first idea for Indiana Jones came while he was working on American Graffiti. He later told the story to Steven Spielberg on a beach. Lucas recalled, “I just told him the story and he got it like that,” referring to Spielberg’s enthusiastic response.
That account describes the character idea taking shape and Lucas sharing it with Spielberg; it is not an explanation of the surname or evidence that Lucas’s wife supplied the name.

How did the idea become a film?
Raiders of the Lost Ark was released in 1981. Lucasfilm describes it as a collaboration between Lucas and Spielberg: the 1930s adventure follows Indiana Jones on a quest involving the Lost Ark. The Lucasfilm film page gives the film’s premise and points to Disney+; streaming availability can vary by region and change over time.
A January 23–27, 1978 story-conference transcript involving Lucas, Spielberg, and screenwriter Larry Kasdan offers a record of the film’s development. The transcript is useful for that context, but its text does not establish the claim that Lucas’s wife gave Indiana Jones his name.
