These methods are not interchangeable: they involve different kinds of structures and decisions. The association’s chapter outline identifies the approaches but does not establish a ranking among them or provide a single comparative account of how deterministic, probabilistic, or composer-directed each method is. Formalization should therefore be understood as one way of composing, not as proof that artistic choice disappears.
How does symbolic logic relate to Herma?
The Xenakis association says the book’s “Symbolic Music” chapter explains symbolic logic used for Herma and discusses a possible application to Beethoven. That supports a careful claim: symbolic logic is presented as a compositional method associated with Herma. It does not mean every sound in the piece—or in Beethoven’s music—is a direct translation of logic.
