Hollywood’s response to CBS ending The Late Show with Stephen Colbert ranged from fellow hosts’ affectionate tributes to celebrities’ concerns about free expression and lawmakers’ calls for transparency. CBS said the May 2026 end was a financial decision; critics questioned the timing after Colbert criticized Paramount’s settlement with Donald Trump. The public reactions document that dispute, but do not establish why CBS made its decision.
What CBS announced—and why the timing raised questions
On July 17, 2025, CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would conclude in May 2026, at the close of the 2025–26 broadcast season, and that the network would retire the Late Show franchise. Colbert told his studio audience he would not be replaced and that the franchise was “all just going away.” CBS’s announcement called Colbert “irreplaceable” and described the decision as “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.” The company said it was not related to the show’s performance or content, or to other matters at Paramount.
The timing became a focus of criticism. On July 14—three days before CBS’s announcement—Colbert condemned Paramount’s $16 million settlement with Donald Trump, calling it a “big fat bribe,” according to the Associated Press and TIME. That phrase was Colbert’s characterization, not a legal finding. The sequence prompted questions about whether the cancellation was political; it does not by itself show that the settlement or political pressure caused CBS’s decision.
How fellow late-night hosts responded
Jimmy Kimmel offered support
ABC host Jimmy Kimmel posted “Love you Stephen” on Instagram and directed an expletive at CBS, the AP reported. His support was both personal and sharply critical of the network.

Jimmy Fallon said he was shocked
NBC’s Jimmy Fallon wrote, “I’m just as shocked as everyone,” according to the AP. He called Colbert “one of the sharpest, funniest hosts to ever do it” and said he had expected them to remain on air together for years.
Why some celebrities and lawmakers raised political concerns
Jamie Lee Curtis framed it as a threat to expression
Actor Jamie Lee Curtis told the AP: “They’re trying to silence people, but that won’t work. Won’t work. We will just get louder.” This was Curtis’s interpretation of the decision, not evidence establishing CBS’s motive.

Adam Schiff and Elizabeth Warren called attention to the timing
Sen. Adam Schiff said that “if Paramount and CBS ended the Late Show for political reasons, the public deserves to know. And deserves better,” the AP reported. His statement was conditional. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, writing as reported by TIME, also pointed to the three-day gap between Colbert’s criticism of the settlement and the cancellation announcement and asked whether the decision was political.
The reactions show why the timing became controversial, not that a political explanation was proven. CBS and Paramount publicly attributed the decision to financial conditions and denied that it was tied to performance, content, or other matters at Paramount.

Colbert hosted the program for 11 years, from 2015 to 2026, and CBS News reported that it produced more than 1,800 episodes. CBS described the show as No. 1 in late night for nine consecutive seasons. The farewell brought together colleagues and performers who had supported Colbert, but those tributes did not represent a single agreed explanation for why the show ended.
