The franchise’s commercial reach was substantial; the available figures do not establish how much the cast earned or prove that their pay was abysmal compared with the show’s profits.
What Miley Cyrus said about her pay
In an interview with Elle, Cyrus reflected on her early compensation: “I mean, at one point—they’ll probably kill me for saying it—I was probably the least paid person on my [Hannah Montana] cast because I didn’t know any better.” TIME reported the comment on September 28, 2016. The qualifier “probably” matters: Cyrus offered a recollection, not a salary figure, contract details, or a documented comparison of every cast member’s pay.

That statement supports saying Cyrus believed she may have been the least paid person on the cast. It does not establish the amount she received, how other performers were paid, or that the entire cast was underpaid.
What the franchise’s commercial scale shows
A 2009 TIME account described Disney’s strategy of using television as a launchpad for opportunities across the company, including recording deals, radio play, soundtracks, concerts, and merchandise. Gary Marsh, then president of entertainment for Disney Channels Worldwide, put it this way: “For many people, TV is an endgame. For us, TV has simply become a launchpad to opportunities elsewhere in the company.” The reporting presented Hannah Montana as part of that broader cross-promotion strategy, not as a show whose value came only from episode broadcasts. (TIME, October 22, 2009.)

That article reported several distinct measures of the franchise’s reach by 2009:
- More than 8 million CDs sold, as reported by TIME.
- $225 million in movie-ticket sales, as reported by TIME.
- 15 million books, as reported by TIME.
These figures describe different products and sales measures; they are not a single profit total. TIME also reported that Disney described Cyrus as worth billions of dollars to the company, but did not provide a calculation. That broad company assessment is not a verified revenue or net-profit figure for the television show.
Why the available figures cannot prove a pay-versus-profit comparison
The compensation and commercial figures do not share a common basis. Cyrus’s recollection gives no salary amount, while the franchise figures combine CD sales, ticket sales, book sales, and an unquantified company valuation. They cannot be turned into a meaningful ratio of cast pay to show profit.
A separate CBS News report from June 16, 2009, said Cyrus made $18 million in the prior year and described Hannah Montana: The Best of Both Worlds Concert as the biggest concert film at that time. The reported annual earnings do not identify her Hannah Montana salary, so they cannot fill in the missing compensation figure.
Later viewing figures show the franchise’s afterlife, not its cast salaries
In March 2026, The Walt Disney Company said the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special drew 6.3 million views across Disney+ and Hulu in its first three days, and that viewing of the catalog increased nearly 1,000% that week. Disney also said fans had streamed more than half a billion hours globally on Disney+ to date. These are company-reported viewing measures with different timeframes; they show continuing audience interest, not revenue, profit, or original cast compensation. (The Walt Disney Company, March 27, 2026.)
Disney’s announcement described a collection with all four seasons, Hannah Montana: The Movie, and Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concert. Catalog availability and rights can vary by location or change over time.

In April 2026, actor and dancer Dana Vaughns described receiving a $66.40 residual check from Hannah Montana: The Movie, alongside smaller checks, in a Us Weekly report. A residual is a later payment tied to reuse or distribution, not an original salary. One performer’s reported check cannot establish the cast’s initial pay arrangements or typical residuals.
