LEGO Horizon Adventures turns the world and machines of Horizon Zero Dawn into a brick-built action-adventure by translating what makes them recognizable—not by simply shrinking the original game. Guerrilla Games, Studio Gobo and the LEGO Group reshaped the setting with playful humor, LEGO construction, player customization and two-player co-op.
How the teams adapted Horizon’s story and tone
The LEGO Group announced LEGO Horizon Adventures in June 2024 as an action-adventure inspired by the events of Horizon Zero Dawn. Its story follows Aloy from her upbringing with Rost through a quest to discover her destiny. The game was co-developed by Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo, with the LEGO Group also credited as a co-developer in Guerrilla’s launch announcement. (LEGO Group, June 6, 2024; Guerrilla Games, November 13, 2024)
Studio Gobo Senior Producer Kat Woolley described the central tonal challenge: bringing something serious from Horizon into LEGO while adding humor, light-heartedness, silliness and play. The aim was not to claim that every element of the original story carried over unchanged. Guerrilla Design Director Stephane Varrault instead emphasized themes of characters seeking family, a home and connection—ideas that could anchor a lighter retelling.
Woolley said: “There’s a layering of talent, passion, creativity and just joy – there’s such joy in working on a LEGO game, and especially something like Horizon where there is an effort to bring something quite serious from the world of Horizon over to LEGO Horizon Adventures. We needed to give it that element of funny, of light-hearted, of silly, of play.” (PlayStation Blog, November 2024)

How they built Aloy’s world, one brick at a time
The visual development began with a more realistic approach. Guerrilla Art Director Roy Postma said the team initially rebuilt Old World buildings in a realistic style. Then an official LEGO set—a gas station—was placed in the background. Seeing it in the scene helped the team recognize that the Old World could work as a LEGO world.
“We started out in a very realistic way, by rebuilding the original Old World buildings from the Horizon games… Then someone sneaked in an official LEGO set in the background, I believe it was the LEGO gas station, and we were looking at it like ‘ah this can work, this is fun!’ It totally made sense for the Old World to be our LEGO world,” Postma said. The resulting game presents its world as made from LEGO elements, from machines and treasure chests to Mother’s Heart, the village players can customize. This describes the game’s digital art direction; it does not mean every object can be recreated exactly with any collection of physical bricks.
How Horizon’s machines became LEGO characters
The machine designs show how the teams used construction as a way to clarify each creature’s identity. Rather than only converting the original models into brick shapes, developers considered what each machine does, how it behaves and which traits should remain legible in LEGO form.

Studio Gobo Game Design Lead Toño Gonzalaz said: “Throughout development, we started by imagining what a LEGO version of each machine would actually look like,” Guerrilla’s Varrault added that the team considered each machine’s traits and behavior, and how it could work with LEGO bricks. (PlayStation Blog, November 2024)
The Shell-Walker offered a specific character example. Its defensive behavior and role protecting cargo informed a personality described by the developers as mean and defensive, but funny. LEGO Creative Lead Frédéric Andre compared the process to Guerrilla’s own machine-design approach: start with a skeleton, then add armor and detail. In LEGO form, that process required deciding which features carried the machine’s essence and which could be simplified.

Customization and co-op shaped the play
Varrault described player freedom as a design pillar, expressed through varied combat situations and open customization of both characters and Mother’s Heart. The LEGO Group’s announcement said players could decorate the village with LEGO buildings and ornaments, making it a place for personal creativity as well as a story setting.
The game supports solo play or two-player co-op, either locally on the same system or online, without split screen. The developers described co-op as a way for players to respond to one another and face the wilds together. Guerrilla’s launch announcement lists difficulty options ranging from Story Mode to Very Hard. (LEGO Group, June 6, 2024; Guerrilla Games, November 13, 2024)

Varrault explained the customization goal: “One of our main pillars in the game is player freedom, which is why we built systems where no combat is the same, but also why we wanted to provide really open ways to customize your characters and the world. For example, we really wanted Mother’s Heart to be a reflection of players’ creativity to recreate the village of their dreams.” (PlayStation Blog, November 2024)
What the developers later shared about production
Guerrilla’s February 27, 2025 GDC schedule listed seven Studio Gobo sessions about LEGO Horizon Adventures. Their subjects included AI combat gameplay with robot dinosaurs, procedural optimization, world art, cinematics, procedural generation with design in mind, design gains and UI identity. The schedule documents the production areas the team discussed publicly; it does not establish specific technical methods or results beyond those session topics. (Guerrilla Games, February 27, 2025)
From the digital world to a physical LEGO set
A directly related physical model followed the game: the Aloy & Varl vs. Shell-Walker & Sawtooth LEGO set. The PlayStation Blog said it included Aloy and Varl minifigures, the two machines and environmental pieces, and was available from March 1, 2025 through LEGO.com and selected retailers around the world. Availability can vary by territory and over time, so check local retailers for current stock. (PlayStation Blog, February 24, 2025)
Varrault said adapting machines into LEGO bricks encouraged designers to focus on essentials: “Working with LEGO bricks and trying to replicate all the machines in this universe forces you to think about abstraction, and abstraction is good for a designer because you start to think about the essence of fun. It’s about going back to the essentials.” Woolley noted that the physical set also offered players a chance to create new storylines with the characters and machines.
