Reports from May 4, 2021, and May 4, 2023 describe different effects, but neither report proves the feature is still available in 2026. You can try the historical trigger terms, provided you treat the result as a seasonal experiment rather than a guaranteed Google feature.
What happened when people searched for the Easter egg?
The reported Google Search effects changed between Star Wars Day celebrations. They were visual novelties, not permanent tools or games, and Google has not established a current support page confirming that either one remains active.
| Reported date | Search terms | What appeared | Interaction and platforms |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 4, 2021 | “Star Wars Day,” plus related searches such as “Star Wars,” “R2-D2,” “Ewok” and “Lightsaber” | Falling confetti mixed with stickers of characters and objects, including Grogu, a stormtrooper, an Ewok, R2-D2, C-3PO and lightsabers | Decorative animation; 9to5Google described it as non-interactive. The report did not establish a complete current device or regional availability picture. |
| May 4, 2023 | “Grogu” or “Baby Yoda” | Grogu appeared in the lower-right corner of the results page | Clicking Grogu made sections of the results disappear in stages. TechCrunch reported the effect on desktop and mobile at that time. |
These are two separate historical reports, not two steps in one continuously available Easter egg. The mechanics, trigger terms and interaction changed.
How to try the historically reported triggers
The following procedure reproduces what the 2021 and 2023 reports said to do. It is a dated record of the reported behavior, not a promise that Google still serves the animation.

- Open Google Search on a desktop or mobile browser.
- For the 2021 effect, search for Star Wars Day. If nothing happens, the report also named Star Wars, R2-D2, Ewok and Lightsaber as related trigger queries.
- For the 2023 effect, search for Grogu or Baby Yoda.
- Look around the lower-right corner for the Grogu interaction described in 2023. If it appears, click it to see the reported staged disappearance of result sections.
- If no animation or character appears, refreshing, changing browsers or repeating the search cannot guarantee activation. The historical reports do not establish which current browser, account, language, region or date settings are required.
Why May 4 is called Star Wars Day
May 4 is a grassroots fan holiday built around the pun “May the 4th be with you,” echoing “May the Force be with you.” StarWars.com describes the phrase’s history as having no single point of origin, with evidence of uses dating to 1978. Its cultural history also cites a 1979 London Evening News advertisement congratulating Margaret Thatcher with the wording “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!”
“Like anything that emerges from the collective passion of a group, the Star Wars fan holiday on the May the 4th each year has no single point of origin.”

Do not confuse Search with Google Assistant
Google also published a separate May 4, 2018 promotion for Google Assistant. Users were invited to say, “Hey Google, may the 4th be with you,” and the promotion described help discovering movies and purchasing tickets. That was an Assistant feature, not the Google Search Easter egg reported in 2021 or 2023.

Does the Grogu Easter egg still work?
Its current status is unconfirmed. The available reports document behavior on May 4, 2021, and May 4, 2023; they do not verify that the effects are live now, that the same words still trigger them, or that availability is identical across devices and regions. Google frequently retires or changes seasonal Search decorations, so an ordinary results page in 2026 would be consistent with the historical record.

What to expect if it does appear
- The 2021 version was a short visual confetti-and-sticker animation rather than an interactive game.
- The 2023 version put a clickable Grogu in the lower-right of Search and removed result sections in stages after a click.
- The named trigger words belonged to specific dated reports; they should not be treated as permanent commands.
- No statistical performance claim or official Google quotation about the Search effects has been established.
