Both stories feature a socially ambitious mother, a wealthy daughter, and a British duke whose title and financial needs make the match advantageous. But Gladys and her groom are fictional, and the show’s storyline is not a literal retelling of Consuelo’s life.
Who did Consuelo Vanderbilt marry?
Consuelo Vanderbilt married Charles Spencer-Churchill, the ninth Duke of Marlborough, on November 6, 1895, at St. Thomas’s Church in New York. She was 18. The Vogue account of the wedding and the Christie’s history of Consuelo and the Duke describe the match as an alliance between American wealth and British aristocratic rank.

Why did the real match appeal to both families?
The marriage joined a Vanderbilt fortune to one of Britain’s most prominent aristocratic titles. Christie’s describes the Duke’s motive as primarily financial: his income alone could not maintain Blenheim Palace and the planned renovation. The National Portrait Gallery’s biography of the Duke says, “In 1895, Charles Spencer-Churchill married the American railroad heiress Consuelo Vanderbilt. They were divorced in 1921 but the Vanderbilt dowry was used to restore Blenheim Palace, and replenish its furnishings and library.”
For Consuelo, the match brought the position of duchess. The parallels with Gladys’s story are therefore not limited to a titled groom: both plots turn on the way a mother’s social ambitions and a daughter’s wealth are used to secure rank.

Was Consuelo Vanderbilt forced to marry the Duke of Marlborough?
The sources describe strong maternal pressure and an arranged match, rather than providing a complete account of Consuelo’s private feelings at every stage. The Newport Mansions analysis explicitly draws a parallel between Bertha’s control of Gladys and Alva’s role in arranging Consuelo’s marriage. It also notes that Alva and William Kissam Vanderbilt had divorced eight months before the wedding, a detail that places the ceremony amid a period of upheaval for the family.
The series gives Gladys a moment of personal candor in her conversation with the Duke about whether she has to love him. Actor Taissa Farmiga described that scene to Marie Claire, saying, “That was the first moment they connected.” That is Farmiga’s reading of the characters’ scene, not evidence about Consuelo’s experience.

How did Consuelo’s marriage end?
Consuelo and the Duke separated in 1906; their divorce followed in 1921. Those were separate events, years apart. The National Portrait Gallery records the divorce date, while Christie’s and Vogue also report the separation and later divorce.

Gladys is not a biographical portrait of Consuelo. Gladys marries the fictional Duke of Buckingham, while Consuelo married the real Duke of Marlborough in 1895. Their storylines share a recognizable pattern of maternal pressure, wealth, status and a highly public wedding, but the series changes the names, chronology and circumstances. Season 3’s ending shows Gladys pregnant and her relationship with the Duke developing; it does not establish how her story will ultimately end.
