Contemporary descriptions said it worked “within seconds,” but that was a period product description—not the result of a published, controlled timing test.
How the Robot Les Paul tuned itself
The Robot Guitar was a physical Gibson electric guitar, not a separate tuner. Its motorized Powerhead tuning machines worked with onboard electronics and an interface called the Master-Control Knob. In Premier Guitar’s September 14, 2007 report, the player activates the knob, strums the strings lightly, and the system tunes the guitar “within seconds.” That account also describes selecting open or alternate tunings.

Sonic State’s November 13, 2007 launch coverage described tuning to standard A440 and accessing altered-tuning presets; it also mentioned an intonation function. These are launch-era descriptions, not independent performance measurements.
What “in seconds” did—and did not—mean
“Within seconds” conveys the speed Gibson’s system was presented as offering in 2007. The cited launch coverage does not provide a measured tuning-time study or a benchmark that applies to every guitar, string condition, or tuning. A later Gibson manual for the specifically named 2010 Les Paul Standard Limited says it should tune in one or two strums, with a two-to-three-second pause between strums. That model-specific instruction is not a measured result for the original 2007 Robot Les Paul.

String gauge and setup
Gibson’s Robot Guitar owner’s manual says the instrument is pre-calibrated for a standard .010–.046 string set. Check the manual for the exact instrument and its setup before changing string gauge; do not assume that instructions for another self-tuning Gibson apply.
The original Robot system versus later G FORCE
Gibson later documented a separate self-tuning system, G FORCE, in its G FORCE owner’s manual. Its procedures belong to that system. The manual is not evidence that the 2007 Robot Guitar used the same controls, button sequences, or firmware. For operation or troubleshooting, identify the system on the particular guitar and use its corresponding manual.

What is known about the 2007 release
Sonic State reported that Gibson planned to make the first limited-edition Robot Guitar run available on December 7, 2007. Its coverage cited a release plan involving 400 dealers and ten instruments per store; those launch figures are not a verified total-production count. They do not establish present-day availability or the condition of any individual used instrument.

The historical descriptions explain how the system was intended to work, but they do not establish whether a particular guitar’s battery, tuning motors, electronics, or original components still function. Before buying, ask which system generation the guitar has and request the manual and a demonstration of its tuning operation. Have a qualified technician inspect it if its operation or setup is uncertain; current parts supply and repair support are not established by the cited sources.
