Frankie Rowsthorn began writing jokes after discovering Saturday Night Live sketches as a young teenager. Her father, comedian Peter Rowsthorn, encouraged her to take the stage and guided her through early gigs—but Frankie has said she writes her own material and is building a comic voice distinct from his.
From watching sketches to trying stand-up
In a 2021 profile, Frankie recalled that YouTube recommendations led her to Saturday Night Live sketches, which sparked her interest in writing jokes. She wrote for years before she began performing regularly. She also said Peter kept asking when she would finally do it; after putting it off, she agreed to perform that night at Fremantle’s Sail and Anchor pub. PerthNow’s 2021 profile describes that performance as her first time on stage at 16.
Frankie later clarified the timeline in a 2024 Beat Magazine interview: at 14, she had performed a three-minute set in a regional Western Australian town during one of her father’s shows. Her first “proper open mic” came at 16, after school. The distinction matters: the pub open mic was not the first time she had performed in front of an audience, but it was her first proper open mic.
How Peter encouraged and mentored her
Peter’s support was both a push to begin and practical company while Frankie was new to comedy. She told Beat that he accompanied her to gigs before she turned 18, helping her feel less alone in an unfamiliar scene. She described him as a mentor and guide whose presence gave her a healthy perspective on comedy. Looking back on her nerves, she said, “I was terrified of starting comedy but I knew I was gonna do it eventually.”

Frankie has also described their relationship as a source of comic material. PerthNow reported in 2021 that she drew on the banter between them, while Frankie stressed her independence as a writer: “I write my own stuff, he’s not much of a writer himself.” Peter’s encouragement, in other words, helped her get started; it did not mean he supplied her jokes.
Finding a comedy voice of her own
Frankie has said that she and Peter share a sense of humour but have different perspectives shaped by age and life experience. In Beat’s 2024 interview, she put it this way: “Our comedy is very different considering he’s a 60-year-old family man and I’m a 21-year-old girl but we do have the same sense of humour.” Those ages describe how she framed the contrast in that interview, not their ages today.

She has named sketch performers Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon among her early influences. Frankie also reflected that performing in Perth pushed her toward jokes that worked consistently. These are her own descriptions of the influences and choices behind her developing style, rather than a claim that she performs in the same way as those comedians.
Father and daughter on the same bill
Their family connection has also become part of their live work. In January 2021, PerthNow reported that Peter and Frankie were performing together at Fringe World in The Comedy Stylings of Pete Rowsthorn and Frankie, following a regional Western Australian tour. That article described Frankie, then 18, as making her first forays into stand-up and said she performed under her first name to avoid seeming like a “showbiz kid.” That was the report’s explanation at the time, not confirmation of her current branding.

In March 2026, InReview reviewed their Fringe collaboration Smooth and Wrinkly and described Frankie as a comedian and radio presenter. The review documents a later joint performance; it does not establish current tour dates or ticket availability.
