Rather than hand Hill a finished look, del Toro reportedly told him what to avoid: a hideous appearance and heavy, ugly stitching. Hill’s answer was a lean figure marked by precise, almost geometric scars—and a design that changes as the creature’s story unfolds.
Del Toro gave Hill boundaries, not a finished design
Hill’s collaboration with del Toro began before Frankenstein. The interview recounts that del Toro first saw Hill’s sculptural work at a convention, then commissioned a sculpture of Boris Karloff undergoing makeup for the 1931 film. Their work together continued on other projects, and del Toro later invited Hill to join Frankenstein.
The creature had been reimagined many times, so Hill faced the challenge of finding a screen design that did not simply repeat familiar choices. According to the interview, del Toro described what he did not want rather than prescribing a specific appearance. Hill explored several options and researched historical surgery techniques. He said he wanted the creature to look as though a person had meticulously assembled him in the 1800s.
That period-built idea shaped the design: rather than relying on prominent, heavy stitching, it uses scars across the body in an almost geometric pattern. Hill described the difficulty of creating a version that felt unseen before, while still making its construction legible.

Beauty is part of the horror
Hill’s design does not treat the creature as simply grotesque. He connected it to Victor Frankenstein’s ambition to make something beautiful, an aspiration that ends in damage. Hill compared the result to a beautiful glass window that had become stained and broken. That metaphor captures the design’s central contrast: an effort at order and beauty disrupted by the visible marks of assembly.
This approach distinguishes the film’s interpretation from the heavy, ugly stitching del Toro reportedly wanted to avoid. It is not a systematic comparison with every stage or screen version; the interview’s contrast is specific to the design choices Hill and del Toro discussed.

Why Hill favored Jacob Elordi
Hill had already spent eight months designing prosthetics for an actor who later left the project because of a conflict. When del Toro sent him possible replacements, Hill favored Jacob Elordi. He cited Elordi’s demeanor, gangliness, limbs, eyes, and facial structure as qualities that suited the creature.
The interview reports that Elordi’s full-body makeup involved 42 prosthetic pieces and took around 10 hours to apply. These are figures reported in the interview, not independently confirmed measurements.

The creature’s look changes as his story changes
At first, the creature is bald and nearly naked, a presentation the interview connects with childlike innocence. After his creator abandons him, he grows his hair and wears a long cloak, giving him a harder, more menacing appearance.
The change is not just wardrobe and hair. The interview also describes Elordi’s performance shifting from cowering to a more threatening presence. The evolving look helps show a character altered by experience, rather than presenting him as one fixed monster image.

Mary Shelley’s story was a lasting influence
Hill described Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as an influence he had carried for a long time. Reading Shelley’s novel offers a direct way to explore the story behind the film, though the interview does not point to a particular edition or present the book as a guide to prosthetic design.
