FOX put Super Bowl LIX on Tubi for free—and promoted 4K on compatible devices. The February 9, 2025 experiment offered viewers an alternative to the traditional pay-TV route while testing whether an ad-supported streaming service could handle one of television’s biggest live audiences.
FOX put one of television’s most valuable live events on a free streaming service—and promised a 4K presentation. On February 9, 2025, Super Bowl LIX was available on Tubi without a paid subscription, giving viewers another official way to watch the Kansas City Chiefs face the Philadelphia Eagles at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
The offer was genuinely free in the subscription sense, but it was not requirement-free: viewers needed a free Tubi account, had to be signed in, and needed compatible hardware for the advertised 4K stream. The experiment also gave FOX a high-profile test of whether an ad-supported streaming platform could handle a mass live audience without replacing the traditional broadcast.
What FOX put on Tubi
Tubi carried FOX’s Super Bowl LIX telecast live. FOX Sports also promoted the network’s pregame programming and a live Tubi Red Carpet pre-show hosted by Olivia Culpo. The game was not exclusive to Tubi: viewers could also use the main FOX broadcast, FOX Deportes, Telemundo, and NFL digital properties.

That combination matters. FOX was not simply moving the Super Bowl from television to streaming. It was adding a free, internet-delivered route alongside the established distribution system. For viewers outside the traditional pay-TV bundle, Tubi offered a way to reach the event without signing up for a cable, satellite, or streaming-TV package.
Was the Tubi Super Bowl really free?
Yes—there was no Tubi subscription fee for the stream. But “free” did not mean that a viewer could open a browser or television app and watch anonymously.
FOX’s viewing instructions and Tubi’s help information indicated that viewers needed:
- A free Tubi account
- An active sign-in
- A supported Tubi app or web platform
- A reliable internet connection
For ordinary access, the account and sign-in requirements were the important qualification. For 4K, the hardware requirements were stricter.

What “4K” meant for the Super Bowl stream
FOX Sports and Tubi described the event as available in 4K on supported devices. That wording is important: the stream was not automatically 4K on every television, phone, computer, or Tubi-compatible device.
Tubi identified supported device categories that included Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, and tvOS. Tubi’s broader platform information also lists devices and systems such as Apple TV, compatible Samsung and Sony smart TVs, Xbox, PlayStation, mobile devices, and the web. However, an app’s presence on a device should not be treated as proof that every live event—or every model within that category—supports 4K.

A viewer seeking the highest-resolution presentation needed a 4K-capable display and a compatible streaming device or television platform. The home network also needed to deliver a stable stream. Tubi’s cited materials did not establish one universal minimum bandwidth figure for this event, so it would be misleading to promise that a particular internet speed guaranteed 4K playback.
Why FOX used Tubi for such an expensive event
The decision was a calculated risk. The Super Bowl commands enormous attention and valuable advertising inventory, so placing its telecast on a free streaming service raised obvious questions: Could Tubi support a huge simultaneous audience? Would the stream be reliable? Would digital advertising work at the scale and intensity expected of a championship broadcast? And would an online option weaken the value of FOX’s traditional distribution partners?
The available evidence does not reveal every private consideration inside FOX. Still, the structure of the event supports a clear interpretation: FOX was testing Tubi as a complementary reach and advertising platform, not merely giving away a one-time game.
Tubi already had the audience scale to make that test meaningful. FOX investor materials said Tubi had surpassed 97 million monthly active users and streamed more than 10 billion hours during calendar 2024. FOX described the service as free and ad-supported, available through connected televisions, mobile devices, and the web. That made Tubi particularly useful for reaching cord-cutters and viewers who were not part of the traditional pay-TV bundle.
In other words, the Super Bowl served two purposes. It was a major piece of live programming for viewers, and it was a public demonstration that Tubi could be used for high-value, high-volume events—not only for an on-demand catalog.

The trade-off: free reach versus broadcast economics
A free stream can expand access, but it does not eliminate the commercial pressure surrounding a marquee sports broadcast. Tubi’s model depends on advertising rather than subscription payments. That creates an opportunity to reach people who may be difficult to find through linear television, while also requiring the platform and its advertising systems to perform during an unusually concentrated live event.
FOX therefore had reasons to make Tubi available and reasons to proceed cautiously. The stream could introduce Tubi to viewers who had never used it, provide additional inventory and audience data, and strengthen FOX’s broader streaming strategy. At the same time, any buffering, login friction, device incompatibility, or confusion over where to watch could damage the experience around one of the industry’s most visible broadcasts.
The multiple official viewing routes helped manage that tension. Tubi expanded access without making it the only place to watch. The arrangement also let FOX compare the role of a free, ad-supported digital outlet with the reach and established habits of the broadcast network.
How many people watched on Tubi?
Tubi reported that its Super Bowl LIX simulcast reached a 13.6 million average-minute audience and a 15.5 million peak audience. Across its game-day programming, beginning with FOX’s pregame show, Tubi reported more than 24 million unique viewers.

Those figures are Tubi’s reported measurements and should be understood in that context; they are not a guarantee that every future sports stream on the service will reproduce the same scale.
Even with that qualification, the numbers gave FOX a substantial proof point. A free, ad-supported service had not merely carried a niche sporting event. It had delivered a Super Bowl simulcast to an audience large enough to make the distribution strategy commercially consequential.

What the results meant for FOX and Tubi
The immediate result strengthened the case for free ad-supported streaming as a venue for premium live programming. Tubi could present evidence of reach, while FOX could show that its streaming arm was capable of supporting a landmark event alongside the company’s conventional television outlets.
FOX later reported that Tubi exceeded 100 million monthly active users in fiscal 2025, generated more than $1.1 billion in revenue, and delivered what FOX described as the most-streamed Super Bowl in history. Those figures are retrospective evidence of Tubi’s momentum. They should not be presented as information viewers had when the event was announced or covered in February 2025.
Recommended Free Tools
The larger lesson is narrower—and more useful—than “all sports are moving to free streaming.” Super Bowl LIX showed that a major broadcaster could use an established free service to add digital reach while preserving the broadcast as the central distribution channel. It demonstrated the possibility of a hybrid model: premium live programming supported by advertising, available beyond the pay-TV bundle, but still connected to a large traditional media operation.
Can you still watch the Super Bowl LIX Tubi stream?
Super Bowl LIX took place on February 9, 2025. Readers should not assume that the live game remains available on Tubi, or that the same free 4K arrangement applies to later Super Bowls or other FOX sports broadcasts.
The durable takeaway is the viewing model and its conditions: Tubi can offer selected live programming without a paid subscription, but availability is event-specific, account access may be required, and 4K depends on the particular device, app, and program. Anyone planning to watch a future event should check the broadcaster’s current announcement and Tubi’s current platform guidance rather than relying on the Super Bowl LIX setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this experiment proved—and what it did not
- It proved that Tubi could attract a very large audience for a major live simulcast.
- It showed that free ad-supported streaming can complement, rather than immediately replace, a broadcast network.
- It gave FOX a high-visibility demonstration of Tubi’s value to cord-cutters and viewers outside the pay-TV bundle.
- It did not prove that every Tubi-compatible device would deliver 4K.
- It did not establish that every future Super Bowl or FOX sports property would be free on Tubi.
- It did not make the event entirely requirement-free: a free account and sign-in were still necessary.
FOX’s wager was ultimately a measured one. The company used its biggest broadcast event to test whether Tubi could function as a mass-market live platform. The reported audience results suggest that the experiment worked well enough to validate the idea—but not to erase the distinctions between free access, free accounts, supported devices, and universal 4K availability.
