Danish Kaneria’s rise in Indian social media grew from two things: an established career in Pakistan cricket and a sustained online presence that increasingly addressed Hindu identity, Indian politics and cricket controversies. A 2019 surge followed comments by Shoaib Akhtar about alleged religious discrimination; a later burst of attention came in October 2023, when Kaneria identified as a “sanatani” in interviews with Indian outlets. Those episodes help explain his visibility, but reported views and follower counts do not prove what caused his audience to grow.

Why Danish Kaneria was already known before social media

Kaneria was not an unknown figure who appeared online from nowhere. He played international cricket for Pakistan, taking 261 wickets in 61 Tests, according to The Indian Express’s 2018 account. India Today reported that he had also taken 15 wickets in one-day internationals in 2019. His cricket career, and the controversies that followed it, gave audiences a public story to connect with his later online presence.

The fixing case became part of his public profile

In 2012, the England and Wales Cricket Board banned Kaneria for life in connection with a spot-fixing case involving Essex teammate Mervyn Westfield, The Indian Express reported. In 2018, Kaneria admitted involvement in an interview with Al Jazeera. The ECB case and Kaneria’s later admission are separate parts of the record: the ban was the governing body’s finding, while the admission was his own statement. The Indian Express’s 2018 report provides that context.

What Shoaib Akhtar said, and how Kaneria responded in 2019

A major attention wave came in 2019 after former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar said Kaneria had been treated unfairly because he was Hindu. In an interview published by India Today on December 27, 2019, Kaneria said Akhtar had told the truth. His account was testimony from Kaneria, not an independently established finding about every teammate or the entire Pakistan team.

Kaneria also named colleagues he said had supported him for his cricketing abilities: Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Yousuf, Younis Khan and Akhtar. He said he had not had issues with them and wanted to clarify their role. The two parts of his account matter together: he acknowledged Akhtar’s allegation while saying several teammates had treated him supportively.

Kaneria told India Today: “I did not have the courage to speak about it but Shoiab bhai spoke about. I am proud that I have played for Pakistan and I have achieved so much against all the odds.” He added that the named players “always supported me for my cricketing abilities.” India Today reported that two of his videos on religious discrimination and the criticism that followed had received more than 1.8 million and 1.4 million views, respectively, by the time Scroll later described them in 2023. Those are historical video-view figures, not evidence by themselves of why viewers watched. Read India Today’s December 2019 interview.

Why attention returned in October 2023

Scroll’s November 18, 2023 feature described support from social-media users as preceding a round of interviews with Indian outlets in late October. In one interview, Kaneria called himself a “sanatani” and spoke about Hindu identity, Indian politics and cricket-related disputes. Scroll reported him saying that “it was his duty to speak against atrocities on Hindus.” That statement and his public positioning brought his religious and political identity into sharper focus for Indian audiences.

Scroll’s account also offered a specific interpretation of the attention: Kaneria’s India- and religion-related videos often drew more engagement than cricket-only posts. It noted posts about festivals and Indian politics, as well as a separate playlist titled “Festivals, Mandirs and Vlogs.” This is a reported pattern and interpretation, not a measured audience study proving that political or religious commentary alone drove his popularity. Scroll’s November 2023 feature records the examples and context.

What the 2023 numbers do—and do not—show

Scroll reported that Kaneria had 1.38 lakh followers on X and 4.24 lakh YouTube subscribers in November 2023. These are dated platform snapshots, not current totals. The numbers indicate a substantial online presence at that time, but they cannot establish how quickly the audience grew, how many followers were in India, or why people followed him.

What Kaneria has said about India since then

In an October 6, 2025 report, The Times of India quoted Kaneria as saying he had no current plan to seek Indian citizenship. The report reproduced a post in which he wrote: “Pakistan may be my Janmabhoomi, but Bharat, the land of my ancestors, is my Matrubhumi.” He described India as his “Matrubhumi,” but his citizenship remark was his stated position at that time—not a permanent or independently verified intention. The Times of India’s October 2025 report documents the later clarification.

So, why did Danish Kaneria become popular in India?

The most grounded explanation is an overlap rather than a single cause. Kaneria brought an existing cricket profile and a personal history that became a subject of public discussion in 2019. By 2023, he had a sustained online presence and was speaking directly to Indian audiences about religion, politics and cricket. Scroll reported that this material often attracted more engagement than cricket-only content, while its dated follower and subscriber counts show the scale of his presence at that moment. No independently measured study in the cited coverage establishes a single cause or quantifies how much each factor contributed.
