Tom Rinaldi is a credited producer, but the official ESPN materials reviewed do not identify anyone named Sexton or establish a role for that person. The production’s reported access gives it range; access alone does not prove that its account is complete or independently verified.
What Saban is and what ESPN says it covers
ESPN announced Saban as a six-part ESPN Original docuseries made with Words + Pictures. It follows Saban’s career, including his time at Alabama and earlier stops at LSU, the Miami Dolphins, and Michigan State. ESPN says the series examines his coaching philosophy, “The Process,” and uses footage from locker rooms, practice fields, and other behind-the-scenes settings.
The announced episode titles are “The Process,” “Death Valley,” “Black Diamonds,” “Home,” “The Mountain,” and “Pride.” ESPN’s August 27, 2026 premiere announcement scheduled them from October 8 through November 5, 2026. It said all six would be available at launch on the ESPN App; that announcement does not establish their present catalog availability.
What Tom Rinaldi and the other credited producers did
ESPN’s production credits name Russell Dinallo as director and Tom Rinaldi as a producer. The other producers named are Words + Pictures’ Connor Schell, Libby Geist, Aaron Cohen, and Alexa Conway. Gabe Honig is credited as co-executive producer and showrunner. These credits establish Rinaldi’s production role; they do not, by themselves, show how much of the film he shaped or establish that any one producer was key to its success.

The title’s reference to “Sexton” cannot be resolved from the reviewed official ESPN announcements or producer feature: none identifies a Sexton or describes that person’s contribution. It would be speculative to assign the name a role based on the title alone.
What the production’s access can—and cannot—establish
ESPN’s August 27, 2026 announcement describes hundreds of hours of previously unseen footage and more than 70 voices. Its January 19, 2026 announcement separately reports more than 30 hours of interviews with Saban and more than 80 interviews with people in his orbit. Those are different measures, described in separate announcements; they should not be collapsed into a single interview count. The figures are ESPN’s production claims, not independently audited totals.

More footage and a broad range of interviewees can give a documentary more material and perspective. They do not alone verify consequential claims, establish impartiality, or demonstrate that important viewpoints are represented. A viewer assessing credibility should consider how the series supports specific assertions, whether it distinguishes recollection from contemporaneous records, and whose accounts or context may be missing.
The producers’ stated aim: beyond the championships
In an ESPN producer feature published October 8, 2026, producer Jalaine Edwards said she wanted the series to explore what Saban thought about major moments he had not discussed at a podium. The feature highlights his Miami Dolphins period, his departure from LSU, and the “Kick Six” as examples. It also presents the participation of Dr. Lonny Rowson—Saban’s longtime friend and a sports psychologist from his Michigan State years—as a way into a less familiar side of the story. These are accounts of the producers’ intentions and editorial choices, not independent findings about what the series ultimately proves.

The feature also emphasizes Terry Saban’s perspective. Senior supervising producer Torey Champagne said, “Terry gives us a window into the person behind Coach Saban and reminds us that his story was never his alone.” That framing makes the couple’s relationship part of the documentary’s account of Saban’s life and career, rather than treating his coaching record as the whole story.
What ESPN’s numbers and quotes mean
ESPN’s series announcements cite seven national championships for Saban—six at Alabama and one at LSU. That count is part of the network’s promotional description. Likewise, Saban’s January 19 announcement quote that he and “Miss Terry” were ready to tell their story, and Connor Schell’s statement that “There will never be another Nick Saban,” communicate the participants’ and producer’s perspectives. Neither statement independently substantiates the series’ historical claims or critical reception.
