Hugh Grant became an international star as Charles in Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994). The romantic comedy brought him wide attention and major acting awards; Notting Hill (1999) cemented his status as a leading man. Later roles in films such as Paddington 2 and Heretic, and the television drama A Very English Scandal, showed an actor willing to move beyond the charming romantic lead.
Before the breakthrough: early films and a reluctant start
Grant had already appeared on screen before the role that made him internationally known. His early credits included Maurice (1987) and Impromptu (1991). In a BAFTA career interview, he recalled that acting was not initially his main interest and described taking a part in the student-made film Privileged. He also performed with the comedy troupe the Jockeys of Norfolk.

Those early experiences built a foundation, but they did not yet make him a household name. That changed with a part that brought together Grant’s performance, Richard Curtis’s writing and Mike Newell’s direction.
Why Four Weddings and a Funeral changed his career
Released on 13 May 1994, Four Weddings and a Funeral cast Grant as Charles, a man navigating love and friendship through a series of social gatherings. The film paired him with Andie MacDowell and gave audiences the hesitant, self-deprecating comic persona that would become closely associated with his early stardom. BAFTA describes the performance as his breakthrough and credits the film with first bringing him international attention. Working Title Films’ film page lists Grant among the cast and credits Newell as director and Curtis as writer.

The casting was not simply inevitable. In a 2024 oral history, The Guardian reported that Newell argued to keep Grant in the role amid production delays. Newell later recalled: “No, he can say these words like nobody else. In the end, I won the fight and I was right.” That is one piece of the film’s story, not a complete explanation for its success: the finished movie combined Curtis’s script, Newell’s lively direction and Grant’s distinctive delivery.
The production was modest in scale: The Guardian reported a 36-day shoot in London and the home counties and a budget of less than £3 million. Curtis said his experience attending 65 weddings over 11 years inspired the script. These details offer context for how the film was made; they do not, by themselves, explain why audiences embraced it.

Awards turned attention into recognition
The film’s success quickly brought major awards recognition. In 1995, Grant won the BAFTA for Best Actor and the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Four Weddings and a Funeral. Those prizes helped establish that he was more than a promising performer in a popular film: he was now an internationally recognized leading actor.
The combination mattered. The role supplied visibility, while the awards gave that breakthrough industry recognition. Grant’s next challenge was to show that audiences would follow him into another hit.

Notting Hill confirmed his romantic-comedy appeal
In 1999, Grant reunited with Curtis for Notting Hill, starring opposite Julia Roberts. Its success reinforced his position as a romantic-comedy lead rather than making Four Weddings look like a one-off. In his BAFTA interview, Grant recalled seeing footage accompanied by the “She” theme and immediately thinking the film was “gigantic.” BAFTA’s event introduction noted that Notting Hill surpassed the UK box-office record set by Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Grant continued in prominent romantic comedies, including Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), About a Boy (2002) and Love Actually (2003). Together, these films made his screen persona familiar to audiences: polished but awkward, charming but capable of undercutting his own confidence.

How Grant broadened his screen image
Grant did not remain confined to romantic leads. Later roles used his comic timing in less conventionally charming forms and gave him room to take on darker or stranger characters. He played a comic villain in Paddington 2, portrayed Jeremy Thorpe in the 2018 television drama A Very English Scandal, and appeared in the 2024 film Heretic. The Associated Press has described this more recent turn toward darker, stranger work.
| Career phase | Examples | What the roles show |
|---|---|---|
| Romantic-comedy breakthrough and leading-man run | Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Notting Hill (1999), Love Actually (2003) | Grant’s hesitant charm and comic timing became a recognizable star persona. |
| Later comic and dramatic roles | Paddington 2, A Very English Scandal (2018), Heretic (2024) | He used that timing in villainous, eccentric and dramatic parts beyond the familiar romantic lead. |
This is a change in the kinds of roles audiences see him play, not a ranking of the films or a claim that one phase replaced the other. The documented career context here extends through Heretic (2024); it does not establish what his latest project is today.
