The Price Is Right contestants are chosen by producers, not by a published scoring formula. For regular studio tapings, staff interview ticketed audience members shortly before filming and look for personality and energy. Some CBS stations also hold separate, advertised casting searches with on-camera auditions. Neither route guarantees selection.
How contestants are chosen at regular tapings
For the regular studio-audience route, production staff speak with ticketed audience members before filming. Executive producer Evelyn Warfel described the interviews as lasting a minute or less. Questions may cover a person’s favorite game, hometown, and what the show means to them; she said the purpose is to get a sense of their energy and personality. Producers may notice a fan’s enthusiasm, but Warfel said people are chosen for different reasons. TV Insider’s June 29, 2024 interview with Warfel describes that process.
A 2007 CBS press release also described producers interviewing ticketed audience members in the hours before taping. That historical account supports the broad interview-based explanation, but it does not establish that every operational detail remains the same today.
What to wear—and what not to assume
Fan-made shirts are one way to show affection for the show, but Warfel said contestants can be selected regardless of what they wear. A costume or particular outfit is not a stated requirement or a proven way to improve your chances. She also cautioned that high heels may be uncomfortable because the show involves physical activity.

How local CBS casting searches differ
Some CBS stations announce local searches that use applications and camera auditions. These are separate from the regular process for ticketed studio audiences, and their formats and eligibility conditions can vary by event.
| Route or event | How candidates enter | What the audition involved |
|---|---|---|
| Regular studio taping | Ticketed audience members may be interviewed by production staff before filming. | Warfel described a pre-taping interview lasting a minute or less, with questions about a favorite game, hometown, and what the show means to the person. TV Insider, June 29, 2024. |
| CBS Philadelphia search, July 2026 | Applicants attended an advertised local search. | The notice described a one-minute on-camera audition and suggested discussing name, age, hometown, occupation, favorite game, dream prize, why the applicant would make a good contestant, and their own “Come on down!” CBS Philadelphia, updated July 22, 2026. |
| CBS Miami search, August 2026 | The event required an application and release, with one application per person. | The notice described an approximately 30-second camera audition. Two semifinalists would be chosen based on clarity of answers, personality, and enthusiasm, then interviewed again in Los Angeles before one was selected to compete. These were rules for that event. CBS Miami, updated July 27, 2026. |
The Miami notice listed applicants as needing to be at least 18 and legal U.S. residents living in one of the 50 states or Washington, D.C., and referred to additional requirements. Philadelphia’s notice also specified age and U.S. residency conditions. Those announcements describe individual searches, not a complete, universal eligibility code. Check the current event’s official application and release for its actual rules, deadline, location, and audition format.

How to prepare without treating it as a formula
- If you want to attend a regular taping: follow the official ticketing and arrival instructions. The interview Warfel described takes place among audience members before filming, and producers make the selection.
- If a local search is announced: use the organizing CBS station’s application and release, and verify that event’s requirements and schedule. A local audition is not interchangeable with the studio-audience process.
- Be ready to introduce yourself clearly: you may want to explain where you’re from, what you enjoy about the show, and why you’d be engaging on camera. Those topics align with producer comments and the prompts in the cited local searches; they are not a guaranteed strategy.
Is there a public selection formula?
The cited accounts describe qualities producers consider, not a formal rubric, published odds, or a method that guarantees a spot. Warfel said producers select people for different reasons, and local-search criteria apply to the particular event that announced them. The available accounts therefore support a practical answer—show your personality and enthusiasm when interviewed—but not a promise that a particular outfit, answer, or level of fandom will get you chosen.
