Lyrics may hinder memory and reading tasks, while instrumental music has not been shown to boost cognition consistently. The effect depends on the audio and the task—and feeling focused is not the same as performing better.
What does the evidence say about music and studying?
A 2022 systematic review by Cheah, Wong, Spitzer, and Coutinho examined 95 articles covering 154 experiments. Overall, it found background music tended to impair memory and language-related performance, with lyrics generally more disruptive than instrumental music. The authors also stressed that outcomes vary with the task, the music, and the people being studied. Read the systematic review.
A more focused 2023 study tested college students on verbal memory, visual memory, reading comprehension, and arithmetic. Music with lyrics had small negative effects on verbal memory, visual memory, and reading comprehension, each reported at approximately d = −0.3. The researchers did not consider the arithmetic result credible (d = −0.19). Instrumental hip-hop lo-fi did not credibly improve or impair performance in those tasks. These findings describe that study’s participants and conditions; they are not a universal estimate for every student or kind of studying. Read the study.
Is music with lyrics bad for studying?
It can be a poor match for work that depends on language or memory. Lyrics add words for the brain to process while a student is reading, learning verbal material, or trying to recall information. The 2023 college-student study found lower performance on verbal memory and reading comprehension with lyrical music, and the broader 2022 review also found lyrics tended to be more disruptive than instrumental music.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That does not establish that lyrics harm every task, every learner, or every listening situation. In the same experiment, the arithmetic result was not credible. Treat the evidence as a reason to be cautious with lyrics during reading and memory work, not as proof that music always damages learning.
Is instrumental music better for studying?
Instrumental music may avoid the added verbal material of lyrics, but “less disruptive” is not the same as “cognitively enhancing.” In the 2023 study, instrumental hip-hop lo-fi did not credibly hinder or improve task performance. That finding does not show that all instrumental styles have identical effects, nor that a particular genre boosts concentration.

Students in that study could recognize some detrimental effects of lyrics, yet instrumental music could still feel helpful. Enjoyment or a subjective sense of focus may matter to a listener, but it does not by itself demonstrate better reading, memory, or other task results.
What does music do to the brain while you study?
It is tempting to explain any change in performance through a settled account of arousal or mood, but the evidence does not establish one. A 2024 systematic review of 31 studies using cardiac, electrodermal, and pupil-size measures found mixed or insufficient results linking music, noise, or binaural beats with autonomic arousal and cognitive performance. Evidence for or against the arousal-mood hypothesis was indirect. Read the review.

That means claims that a specific sound reliably changes brain activity in a way that improves studying go beyond what this evidence supports. The practical question is whether a given audio choice helps you complete a particular task accurately—not whether it sounds as though it should improve focus.

Use silence as a baseline, especially for reading, language learning, or memorization. If you prefer music, compare instrumental audio with silence on the same kind of work. This is a cautious practical inference from the studies, not an individualized prescription.

- Choose one task. Compare like with like—for example, two similar reading or memory sessions rather than reading one day and arithmetic the next.
- Try silence first. Record a simple outcome relevant to the task, such as correct answers, material recalled, or time taken without sacrificing accuracy.
- Try instrumental music. Keep the task and your measure as similar as possible, then compare the result with your silent session.
- Use lyrics only as a separate comparison. For language-heavy work, the available evidence gives reason to be cautious; do not infer that a preferred playlist improved learning simply because the session felt pleasant.
This comparison will not prove a universal rule, but it can help distinguish personal preference from performance on the work in front of you.
