How Does Everyone Know Kane’s Last Word Was “Rosebud” in *Citizen Kane*?

The film never shows who heard Kane say “Rosebud” or how the word reached the newsreel. The audience, unlike reporter Jerry Thompson, sees the answer at the end.

They don’t all know it in the same way. The audience hears Charles Foster Kane say “Rosebud” in the opening; the newsroom learns it from the film’s newsreel; and reporter Jerry Thompson is sent to investigate. The film never shows a witness in Kane’s room or explains exactly who reported the word. Thompson never solves the mystery—the audience sees its answer only at the end.

Who hears Kane say “Rosebud”?

The opening shows Kane alone as he dies and whispers “Rosebud.” No other person is shown in the room hearing him. The film then moves from that intimate scene into the “News on the March” newsreel, which presents Rosebud as Kane’s last word. Yale’s film notes describe the transition from the close-up to the newsreel; the Library of Congress catalog record likewise summarizes the opening and the later sled reveal.

So the precise answer to “Who heard him?” is: the film does not identify anyone. It neither shows a witness nor explains the reporting chain by which the word reached the newsreel. An attendant, doctor, nurse, or other informant may seem plausible, but naming one would go beyond what the film establishes.

How does the newsroom know?

The newsroom treats Rosebud as information already reported in the newsreel. Editor Rawlston sees the word as a mystery worth investigating and assigns reporter Jerry Thompson to find out what it meant. PBS describes this assignment and Thompson’s inquiry in its overview of *Citizen Kane*.

That is the story’s on-screen explanation for why the reporters discuss Rosebud: they have the newsreel’s account, not a scene showing how the word was first confirmed. The gap between a private death and a public report is left unstated.

What the reporters learn—and what the audience learns

Thompson interviews people from Kane’s life, assembling accounts of the man without discovering what Rosebud means. The reporting gives the audience fragments of Kane’s history, but the reporter’s investigation does not produce the final answer.

At the end, the audience sees the name “Rosebud” on Kane’s childhood sled as it is discarded among his possessions. The reporters do not see this reveal. The Library of Congress records the sled’s role in the plot, and HISTORY’s account distinguishes the audience’s discovery from the characters’ unresolved investigation.

What Rosebud means in the story

In a 1941 statement released by RKO, Orson Welles explained: “’Rosebud’ is the trade name of a cheap little sled on which Kane was playing on the day he was taken away from his home and his mother.” HISTORY reproduces the statement in its discussion of Rosebud’s meaning.

The sled ties the word to Kane’s childhood and the separation from home and mother that shaped his life. That gives the audience a poignant clue, not a complete explanation of Kane. As Yale’s film notes suggest, the story remains a labyrinth rather than a puzzle with one word that accounts for everything.

Was Rosebud based on a real-life nickname?

The film’s meaning and the word’s real-world origin are separate questions. Welles’s statement explains what Rosebud is in the story; it does not establish why the writers chose that name. HISTORY recounts competing theories, including the racehorse Old Rosebud and a stolen bicycle, as well as the rumor that William Randolph Hearst used “Rosebud” as a nickname for Marion Davies. The AFI Catalog cautions against treating the Hearst theory as settled, noting that the word was already in the script by the time Hearst is said to have seen it. The available accounts do not establish the writers’ original reason for choosing the name.
